MASTERTON-OPAKI JOCKEY CLUB.

St Patrick's Day Meeting. Officers of tue Club. President, A. W. Cave; Hon Treas, A. A. Elkins, Judge, 0. F. Vallance; Starter, W. Hirschberg; Handicapper, A. King, Clerk of Scales, T.Shaw; Timekeeper, J. Muir; Clerk of Course, W. lorns; Stewards: Messrs A. Walker, G. Drummond, E. E, i Chamberlain, C, Cowper, 11. j Yates, T.Thompson, A, Henderson, W. Cameron. Secretary, E. H. Waddington.

Yesterday (St, Patrick's Day) commenced with splendid weather, and until noon not a cloud could be seen. This coupled with the fact that no counter attraction existed in tho neighbourhood of Masterton, induced a large number of people to journey out to the racecourse. Everything went well until shortly alter two o'clock i when with very little warning a heavy downpour of rain commenced, driving several home, and making things generally miserable for those who elected to stay it out, Tho unexpected change in the weather was most unfortunate, as otherwise we should undoubtedly have had to chronicle one 'of the most; successful meetings the Club ever held, With the course in excellent condition and large fields, tba racing was' interesting, and some close finishes were witnessed. With regard to tho Secretarial duties it is perhaps superfluous to state that Mr E. H. Waddington was untiring in his efforts, and to him and his able lieutenant (MrT.CD'Arcy) thePresßis indebted for muoh courtesy and attention, The work allotted to each of the Club offioials, was carried out in a manner that gave evidence of the thorough knowledge of the duties imposed upon them,. and showed the interest they all take in the Club's welfare Mr James Wickens, as usual, provided luncheon both inside and outside the grandstand enclosure, and with an efficient Btaff of waiters was kept busy. In fact, visitors to tho Opaki races look forward to Host Wickens' luncheons, knowing that they may rely on getting something good and substantial served up in a palatablo manner, Thirsty soulspretty numerous ihey appeared to be too-were supplied by Messrs Eayner and Eastwood, who were in charge of the inside and outside booths respectively, General good order prevailed throughout the day, although towards evening one or two gentlemen seemed to be suffering from the effeots of rain, and were hardly in a condition to walk tho proverbial chalked line. The services of the police were not, however, colled into requisition, everything pacing off quietly. During the day several charming selections were given by the Masterton Volunteer Band under the ton of Bandmaster Candy. The following are the details of the ruing;— lUOKHUKDLE HANDICAP, 80 80VB miles,
