GREYTOWN VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.
Annual Sports, (From Our Own Correspondent). Tho above sports were hold at Greytown yesterday. The weather was all that could bo desired in the morning, but the afternoon was sho%ry. A large number of onlookers assembled during the day. Tho Greytown Private Band and the Papawai Brass Band kindly played selections during the day which greatly onlivenrd tho proceedings, His Worship the Mayor (Mr F. H. Wood) and Messrs Baillie and Haigb.officiated as Judges, Mr John Jackson, ns starter, and Messrs Wakolin, Gallon and Loasby as timekeepers, all of whom fulfilled their arduous duties in a very satisfactory manner to all concerned. The firemen, and their energetic Sec» rotary (Mr J. L. Eees), worked hard to make tho affair ut success, and eservo credit for their untiring endeavours, Mrs AJones bad a refreshment booth anJHK J. Hiley a publican's booth orrthe ground, which were well patronised during the day. Mrs Jones deserves special mention for the way in which she wailed on tho Judges, bandsmen, etc., during luncheon. During tho afternoon a most disgraceful fight took place. The Secretary and C. Petersen had & few words, and Constable Eccleton (in uniform) separated them; Peterson thereupon turned on tho constable, and greatly disfigured his face, A struggle ensued, during which Peterson made use of very bad language to the constable, After some trouble Peterson was marohed off the field ,V and placed iii a trap and conveyed to jßHfe&Sgfeolice Stntioo. lho following were tho successful competitors : Maiden Race. 150 yards, Ist prize £l, 2nd 10s. B. Allen 1 F. Butement 2 Five started, and Allen won by about two yards. Time 17sees. Hurdle Baoe (Maiden) 20 yards. Ist prizo £1 10s, 2nd 10s, Hui Kumeroa 1 ' Hudson 2 Kumeroa fell at the last hurdle, but quickly recovered himself un won tho race. Time 29 l-ssec. ' Engine Competition, ' One man. Ist medal and 10s, 2nd trop'ny, 3rd trophy.
