Palmerston seems to be Buffering a revival of its old opidomio of flame. A short timo ago it held the record for the number of lires in a Riven time. But, with the praotical destruction of a sido of the Square, there was a lull, followed now by another period of Activity, To bo a fireman in such a town must be a heartbreaking fate, and to have risks there must be like being on pins and needles, It is easy to nee, in faofc, that un. less the town drop into a loss inflammatory mood it will carry its ■ emulation of Ohioago to unoomfortable lengths; for, some windy night, ono of its ''mysterious" fires will start a conflagration which will Bweep its Bite as clem of houseaasthe Waikato Plains.—Adyocate. Amongst the visitors who camo up from Greytown tho other day to hear Max O'Rell lecture in tho Masterton Theatro, we noticed tho tall form of Mr William Skeet, It is somewhat of a Bhock to us to learn that ho baa now joined the majority. InGroytown whore he practised as a suiveyor for many years, ho was one of the few remaining links connecting the residents of to-day with the early settlers of tho old town. He was a tnan of striot integrity, very outspoken in Mb opinions, but commanding the esteem of his fellow men by his sterling worth. Much sympathy will be felt with Mrs Skeet, who for a generation past has shared with her late husband the respect and friondshipof the community. The London correspondent of the Duriedin Star, writing of tho late Hawley Smart saysj-A large number uf England's sturdiest " Johnnie's " (to use the delation thev love best), measure literature by the Bible (which they read occasionally), by the "Field" (which they never on any account miss perusing at the earliest possible moment, whether in Newmarket, New York, or New Guinea,) and by a few novels The latter aie usually tho work of Major Hawley Smart, who, I regret' to say, diod on Monday last, aged sixty. Hawley Smart had not the geni»B of Whyfce Melville, but fos tastes were more catholic, Especially did he do good service in pictur ing tho turf and turfites, not as It had pleased moralists, eto. t to draw thorn hitherto, but aB they really are. Till' Bound to Win' took sporting England by Btorm in 1877 a respectable betting man was unknown in fiction, This novel originally ran through 1 Bell's Life in London,' and probably marked tho zenith of Hawley Smart's reputation. He first, however, soored success with ' Breezie Langton ' (a brightly told military and hunting tale) as long ago as 1869. ' A Race for a Wife,' published a year later, was even more widely read j in fact, this proved tho hit pai exceUm lof his earlier period, being reissued in 1872,1879, and 1885, Altogether, flaw, ley Stuart wrote within two of forty novels and novolettei, His form was unequal, moro partioularl/ latterly. In my opinion Hawley Smart'B most inter, eating books are ' The Great Tontine,' 1 Bound to Win,' 1 Tie and Trick,' and ' Struck Down.'
