Being tub extended title of the Wairarafa Daily, with which it is identioal
The last news from Ireland is saddening, In Belfast, the chief manufacturing and commercial centre of the Kingdom, Mr Gladstone has been burnt in effigy, und the Protestant inhabitants declare that, they will refuse to pay taxes and resist laws if an Irish Parliament be established, In Belfast, about two thirds oi the inhabitants are Protestant and one third Catholic, so that oven there unanimity of opinion is not likely to be found, Still, the existence of a mixed religious population in a country which has not beeuaocustomcd to practise religious toleration, and in one where denominational differences have divided political parties the issue must, to a great extent, be determined on ecclesiastical lines, That civil rebellion and bloodshed may follow upon Mr Gladstone's success is fairly probable. The north Irish as well as the south Jrißh are a hotblooded people and it will not be easy when once passions are roused to avoid a conflict, A united Ireland moans that Ulster must bo first conquered, Unless under the stas of "blood and iron" that province would be unlikely to ally itaelf in one Parliament with the rest of the country. It prefers being part of a great Empire to being a province of a small Kingdom, It is in touch with England, Scotland and Ireland, but it is at enmity with South and West Ireland. To put Ulster at tho mercy of a power which it detests, means bringing it into subjection. If Mr Gladstone carries his measure be will have either to pacify Ulster or to quell rebellion within the Province, Thoformer will be difficult, the late will tarnish the last great achievement of his political career.
