Great Britain seems now embued with the Gladstonian enthusiasm, and leavened with the Gladstonian loaven, bo (bat it would be more of a shock thun a surprise if the Home Rule project were carried by the House of Commons. Were Mr Gladstone unable to take an active part in tbe fight, the whole scheme would fall to pieces like a house of cards. The personal ascandency of one illustrious man, who has mesmerised tbe people of England rather than their representatives, ib projecting changes ''bat may lead to the disintegration of the Empire- Home of the great men of England, like John Bright, who might have opposed him with an eloquence equal to his own, have passed away, and virtually, of parliamentary giauts, he is the sole survivor. The country which is supposed to be benefited by the great change is now threatened with oivil rebellion and financial panic, sad preludes in Ireland of famine, distress, and disaster. The Gladstonian victory, if it comes about, will be a calamity; and it jvill take years for ihe unhappy po.UDtry to right itself and regain that condition of psppperity which it enjoyed under the Salisbury Cfovernpaent. Thfifo are piany who believe that Me Gladstone cannot make a mistake on a ereat question j but as Mr Chamberlain once pointed oyt, he took a wrong view of that marvellous crisis of tbe present century, « tbe American civil war," and be may be mistaken on the Irißh question. If so, what tremendous consequences to i Great Britain would be involved in j such a blunder.
Mn E. Tennyson Smith appears to bf> fl.fi eleot.orate. We are not ipforpaed fp which flißtrictho is prepared to offer bjs band nijd Jiesri and, for all wo know to tbe contrary, be may have an eye on Maaterton, ho may long once mora to challenge Mr Hogg on a public platform. It is questionable whether (be temperance party in this electorate would be strong enough io return a leading Prohibitionist, nor perhaps is il desirable to ksiid to Hours men who are: wedded to'oae special rpffltm and who would be comparatively indifferent to general political questions. However, a candidate like Mr Tennyson Smith, if he obtained a seat iu tbe pjsglit W reasonably expected tp rsse pfft, which is pßrtainly, ijt. tb,e preseflit : timja, Jjeloyf par, so that his presence iu our £arliamentary Councils would not bo an unmixedsvil. :■

The ways of the commission agent are sometimes past finding out. A case cropped tip in court the other day by which it would appear a client put a property in band for sale, but with the surroundings evidently was satisfied that he would be well out of it if paid for everything shown on tbe premises, innocently remarking to his agent that" if you can get anything far eoodwill you can keep it youraelf." The vendor had no idea that this article would probably reach three figures. The moral is keep your eye on your aganta and fix your goodwill.
