FLOODS AT OTAKI.
(By Telegraph,—Press Association). Otaki, February 18, The river is iu groat flood to-day. Mr James' house, above tbo railway bridge, is surrounded, and a party has gone out in a boat to rcsoue the occupants, If the rain continues it will be the largest flood known here.. Later, A person has just been resoned from Mr James' house attor great diOiculty. The following telegram was received last night by Inspector Pender from Constable O'Rorke, statioued at Otaki: i —" There has been a torriblo flood in this district to-day, and consequently, considerable loss of property; but happily, through ths heroic action ofj Mr Knrkcck, J,P., assisted by Hori te Waruand Hoani Tawhiri, uo lives I have been lost, as tbey rescued Mr James (settler) and bis wife and bis wife and family from tlio centre of the Oluki liivor by means of a boat. The Hood is abating No others are in danger.
