THE EARTHQUAKE YESTERDAY.

Tho earthquake felt horo was far more severe in somo other parts of the Colony, At Wellington accordiny to the N.Z. Times, it was the sharpost earthquake shock that has boon felt thero for the paat 11 yoara. Thora was first of all a dull, rumbling sound, like distant thunder then a protracted tremor, closely followed by two sharp shocks, and ending with another tremour—tho entire movemeet lasting about 20 seconds. Clocks were stopped in many instances, ai ticlos shaken down from shelves and tables in private dwellings and tradesman's shops, window panes smashed in a number o( cases, and other damage mure or less serious dono, Thora was nothing, however, of any sensational moment. Several chimneys are said to havo been knocked down, viz,, one in ileid etrcot, ono in Ingestro street, one near Mount Cuok Gaol and ono near tho Hospital. The facade of tho Free Library on its eastern side near tho Board of Education building exhibits sumo cracks at the junction of the white Uamnru stone with tho brickwork, and Binall piecos of the cornices wero knocked off into the street. The news of this damage soon <?ot abroad in a more or less exaggerated form, and numbers of people went round to have a look during tho day. Inside tho building the petering of several of the coiliugs is said to display slight cracks hero and there, but this information noods verification. At any rate the damago externally appears to bo but very Blight. A former crack near tho top of tho Destructor chimney is reported to liavo been extended downward for some distanoo. On tho Willis street frontage of Jamicsou Bros, and Co's shop (at the corner of Willis and Dixon streets) tho platcglaes window was smashed, and evidently some vessels hiside containing troaclo and jam camo to grief, as tho liquid camo oozing through on to the footpath, and imparted quite a sanguinary aspect to tho shutters. In another grocery shop in Upper Willis street somo 901b or toa dono up in small packets were shaken ok* the shelves, and in Messrs Gurney Bros,' (baskotmakers) noxtdusr several vases wero thrown ofT the mantlepiece, while at tho Albert Hotel a number of buttles were shaken down, At Aaher's establishment in Manners street we hear of damapo to the stock of crockery, and at Campbell's grocery, in the Bame street, ornamentß were thrown down and broken, and a clock stopped. There aro numerous cases of tho same kink, but, of courao, tho full extent of tho damage will not bo known until the tradesmen'sshops are various places of business aro opened this morning. At any rate, no damage of any consequence was reported last night, and no injury to life or limb.

Tho interior of the Nolson Club shows evidonce of the movements of the stono building, and tho next building is rather badly damaged. In some stores a good deal of damace was done, but being Sunday it is impossible to estimate the value. The Mayor's houso Buffered a good deal. It is thought tho loss will exceed £4OOO. No one was hurt. ' Westport, February 12, A prolonged shock of oarthquake was felt this morning at about 8 o'oiook, The direction was west to east. Hokiiika, February 12. Two smart shocks of earthquake was felt this morning about 8 o'clock. There was an interval of two minutes bctweon the two. Tho second one laatod 45 seconds.
