A meeting of tlioso interested in dairy mattew was licld yesterday (Tuesday) evening in the Lyceum Hall, Carterton, Mr \V. B. Allen occupied the chair and called on Mr Darling to inform the meeting what had been done up the West Coast line.
Mr Darling read from the newspaper giving the details of the meeting held in Palmerston North, on the 23rd December last, at which meeting
Mr Darling was elected Secretary, and gave particulars of his canvassing, lie had mot with great success in the New Plymouth district. He advised the co-operative system as the beet means tomakedairyiuga completesuccess and farther stated that tlio association did not intend to rely upon any particular market for the sale of the butter, and quoted figures to show the satisfactory prices realised in Cape Town. Jt was intended to form a company of 40,000 shares at £2los per sharo, and to call up 20,000 shares at the commencement, the shares only to be allotted to farmers and milk suppliers, The principles of the working of the factory to bo those laid down by Mr Sawyers, Tlio Association would bo worked strictly on the cash systoin. In answer to Mr Fenshaui, Mr Darling stated that 3d per gallon was the price to be paid, and then at the end of the year to divide anything mado over that amount, Mr J. Smith stated that the factories which are at present oxisting cannot find sufficient milk, and did not think there suliioiont opeuing for ft Creamery in Cui'torton,
Mr Darling was strongly of the opinion that butter is far the most payable farming concern,
Mr G, A, Fairbrother did not think there was a sufficient milk supply for making both cheese and butter,
Mr Morgan wished to know if the mooting had been called- merely to gather information, or for tho purpose of starting a Creamsry, Mr Darling stated that the meotini; was for both purposes. In answer to Mr Smith Mr Darling stated that lie considered that if the supporters of the cheese factories became members of the butter and creamery association bo thought that thero would be no difficulty about the association, taking over the cheese factories. It was proposed by Mr Fairbrotber and seconded by Mr Smith that a voto of thanks bo accorded Mr Darling for laying tho views of the Butter Association before tho meeting.
A vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the meeting to a close.
