MEETING OF CREDITORS.

Estate of Thos. A, Howell, Vj Pahiatua,

A meeting of the creditors in the estate of 'Thomas A. Howell, hairdresser, etc., of Pahiatuo, was helo held to<day in the office of Mr W. B, Clicnnells, D.0.A., Mr Chennells prosiding, Tho creditors present were Mr Napthali and Mr Maunsell. Proxys were roceived from Messrs Hayman and Co,, and Benjamin and Co, Mr Tosswill appeared for the debtor, and Mr Bunny appeared. for the D.O.A, The debtors written statement was to tho effect that he had commenced business as a hairdresser only, and as time went on ho bought a little Block with tlie money ho made, but, after starting as a tobacconist the want oi capital and unsuccessful business during the tyst eight or nine months had caused liitn to file,

The debtor on oath stated in reply to Mr Bunny that ho started business in March 1891. Ho was thou an undischarged bankiupt. He had then no capital. Ho had not intimated to ntiv of tbo creditors that he was an undischarged bankrupt. Did not take stock when lie estimated it tit £l2O. Could not say what was the amount of the largest stock ho had at auy time. Novcr tool: stock. He had given nil particulars to the Assignee. The furniture was Mrs Howell's, they had it before his previous bankruptcy, His wife got money from her bro'her at various limes and purchased furniture, it might bo worth .£2O. He had sometimes paid the rent out of business takings. Mrs Howell had paid for the furniture to Mr Grinliuton on a bailment. Did not include the tools in statement ofassets. Tho business was paying till about nine or ten months ago up till then lie met all his engagements, Since then times had got bad and tho rent had been raised till it came to ono pound' per week, Up till recently th»y lived at tho sbop, Had not purchased any stock for five or six months. Had not refuse! credit, had no offer to make, To Mr Cliennells: It ra'in July, 1890, that lie first, became bankrupt, He was not 1 hen in business, the debts were composed of store and doctors' bills. His wifi had no other property, Ho had nothing to do with tbe purchase of furniture, and it was made by his wife. The delay in tiling was caused by waiting to si : e if any one would assist him to pay a composition. The weekly takings would average three to four pounds. To Mr Mandel: Thought Mr Mandel was tho last creditor he had paid any money to. He had lately been living ou the takings.' The books would show how bo had expended llie

To Mr Napthali: Apart from hair-

dressing tho takings were very small lately. Ho had to purchase tobacco and sell it for the same as ho gave for it. The holidays last year were very bad for business.

To Mr Chonnells: Had not p iiJ any money to Hayman. The goods were bought in June last, Mr Uhennells said that it' tlic slock was realised at the debtor's estimate, tho ostate would not le so bad, but his agent had made a valuation of tho slock at .£99 16s 81d, against the debtor's estimate of 1120. Mr Mandel suggested that the business should be put up by auction in place of calling tenders, Proposed by MrNapthali, seconded by Mr Mandel, that the D.O.A put up the atock-in trado to auction, a reserve to be arranged, failing a Bale at the reserve, the D.O.A, to call for tenders.—Carried.
