A WOMAN AND HER CREDITORS.
"A Leap for Life," An infonnul meeting of the creditors of Eliza Thompson, herbalist, was held in Wellington yesterday. Tha debtor submitted a written statement to the effect that Bbo was the mother of sixteen children, Three daughters had returned to hor after the di-uth of their husbands, In consequence of domestic infelicity, she left Westport and ciime to Wellington, arriving there with £2O aud five lutle children. A Wellington wholesale man, to whom she owed £l7 15b, threatened to give her in chargo if she did not pay, and she liquidated the amount out'of her JE27. She waslaid up with rheumatism, and her children also took ill with the scatlot fever, Her husband camo up to Wellington, but after beiny there a short time the strike occurred, and he was idlo for a long period. When he recovered he met with an atxident while working at one of the Union Company's coal steamers, and ho was laid up for a long time. Two of her children also took ill—one with brain fever and the other with typhoid fever. Her household goods aud personal effects would not fetch mure than £lO, and she could not make any offer to her creditors, The only creditor represented wbb Mr Rumbold, produce merchant, of Nelson, for whom Mr Churchward appeared. The Official Assignee produced accounts showiug that Mrs Thompson had sold the slock in her shop at Westport for £3l 7s net. Tho debtor, under examination, said that she had left Westport in a hurry, tearing her husband's anger. It was not a fact that the night she left she placed a light in tho house and locked tho door so us to deceivo people, in order that she might get away, Mr Churchward stated that Mr Humbold had assured him hat the stock was sacrificed after Mrs Thompson's hurried departure, Mrs Thompson replying to Mr Glrarohwatd, said that sho considered her departure from Westporc was a leap for life. What sho had dono had been done in tho interests of her children. She was ill when she left Westport, and quite unable to face any more trouble. Tho reason sho had filed was that Mr Rumbold had pressed for payment of his account, Mr Churchward denied that Mr Rumoold bad pressed her. After further examination the meeting terminated. -Poll.
