MASTERTON ROAD BOARD.
Ordinary Meeting. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Masterton Itoad Board was held on Saturday last there being present, Messrs W. fl, Bcetham (chairman), Harris, Holmes and Wardell, Minutes, Ths minutes of the last ordinary meeting woro rend and confirmed. CorrespondeKoe. _ The correspondence outwards and inwards since the dato of last meeting Was read. . 1 . , GENERAL. , It was moved by the Chairman and seconded by Mr Harris that the proposal of the. Commissioner of Waste Lands to dispose of the old road line between sections 20 and 21, Kopuaranga bo approved, . Carried. ....
■ Mr Harris moved and Mr Holmes seconded that the olerk be instructed, upon receiving a satisfactory guarantee to cover preliminary expenses frdrai the promoters of the proposal to raise a loan of £7OO for widening the present bridle track ou Dorset's and Kakaamu Roads,to take the necessary steps to raise the loan. Carried. Mr Brown Hunt waited on the Board to state that he was prepared to, contribute a sum of £2 towards ihe cost of offeoting certain necessary repairs o» tho Miki Miki road, and ask the Board to subsidize the amount by a contribution of £2, in 1 addition to the balanoo of the sum allooated for expenditure on tho road during the current year, Mr Hunt, further drew the Board's attention to the fact that the branch road, giving access to seotion 26, the property of Mr E, E, Chamberlain, was laid off after the Crown grant bad matured, that he (Mr Hunt) had fenced the road line at his own exponce, and that since publicity had been given to the position of the proposed road through Weraiti Block, he had come to the conclusion that tho Board had no right to the road without paying compensation which he estimated at £2O, He stated that the branch line under notice bad been in use for seven or eight years and admitted that £5 of publio money had been expended on it, Mr Hunt retired and after discus* sion, the .Chairman moved and Mr Holmes seconded "That in view if the determination of the Board to msko an effort to reduce its liabilities in part, during the coming year, the amount allocated for expenditure (in tho Mikimiki Road cannot be exceeded and that Mr Hunt be informed accordingly and asked whether under tWe circumstances he is still prepared to give his promised contribution pE £2, —The motion was carried, Mr Hdmes moved and Mr Wardell secondedjthat Mr Hunt bo informed that tho Jjoard jg unable to recognise hia ■ claim! for compensation for the branch lin leading to section 2(i, and that his attention be directed to the provisions f seotion 71 of the Public Works Act! 1892,—Carried, Mr H. (Burnett waited on the Board with Reference to tho expendi« ture of the balance of " Burnett's Road Loan.'!, He requested that the remainder bejexpended in metalling between the jt notion with the' Fern' ridge road and the sawmill on seotion ,14. It, was leoided to grant Mr Burnett's reqUt, and oall tenders for the work pwviding a majority of the ratepayers mterosted in the loan are in favour ojthe proposal. In reply to a( application from Mr Devonport to M allowed to cut firewood on the Wdit Bush road it was resolved not to/ grant any definite
permission, bat at the s«m\ to offer noobjeotion to settlersetuakmg use of the timber of the merr on the understanding that traMo is no; <in any way impeded, nnd that the Board willnot he responsible for any damage arising oat of the catting of such timber.
Weraiti Road. The hour (8.80 p.m) havijtfatrived which had been fixed iwliearing evidenco in support of in by Mr White and Mrs Lucena, to the taking of a road through the Weraiti Blook, tlio ' Chairman read a telegram received from Mr White on the subject, the purport of vihioli :wa'B that he (Mr White) was unable to attenfl the meeting, but intended to- claim £B,OOO damages if the road is taken.
The Chairman moved, and Mr Holmes seconded, " Tbat tho matter be referred to the Board's solicitor with a request that lie will'advfse whether the proceedings of the Board aro in ordor, and if his opinion ia favourablo the proceedings to take the road be continued." Carried.
adjustment of boundaries. In connection from theMauriceville ItßßjEoard deolining to proceed further with the pro. posed re-adjustment of boundaries, it was decided to request the Commis« sionor of Lands that as the ocoupiera of flections 9 and 7, Block Mikimiki, will, to a large extent, avail themselves of tho roads in the Masterton distriot, tho thirds derivable from these sections be paid to the Board. ACCOUNTS. Accounts as recommended by tho Finance Committee were passod for payment. ENGINEER'S REPORT, - t The Engineer's report wa^wed and adopted.' "
