Greytown ut. Masterton.
[By Umpire,l The return match between the übovo teams took place on Saturday last, at Groytown, when tho home team retaliated with a vengeance, and won on the first innings by sixty-six runs. Greytown had a really splendid team, and their exhibition of cricket was a treat to witness. Tho Masterton team was undoubtedly a strung one (although two or three picked men disappointed), and with the practice of the winners, would, I fancy, prove their superiors. . The ground was in splendid condition, thanks to the energetic members of the cricketing fraternity in Greytown, and a fair number of I enthusiasts enjoyed the display from points of vantage during tho afternoon, I
Play was not commenced before three o'clock, which allowed only for a ono innings match. Greyiown winning the toss, elected to put Masterton in tbo field, and Nicholls and Hawko faced the howling oi Malcolm and IgguWen. Both players batted carefully at the start. Tbo bowlers wero on tbo wickot, and rims came slowly but surely. Nicola showed excellent form, anJ gave only ono chance, when he had reached 28, and that was speedily taken advantage of, being cleverly caught by Hansen. Hawko had a very short lifo, Aitbi taking a beautiful catch from a drive. Udy and Knell were disposed of for five and six respectfully, W. Judd made ihiuus vnry merry for the field, and when 22 was totalled, lie was prettily taken by Malcolm. A, Udy was the next troublesome customer, and with 24 to his oredit retired 'to a stunner from Iggulden, The remainder did not live long, and the innings closed for tho grand total of 114, The fielding of tho Masterton team was excellent and considering the little practice they have had was more than creditable, Broad and Aitken, especially, fielded in pretty style, and the former made ono beautiful catch from a difficult angle, reviving quite an ovation from tho spectators. Whatman was as usual very clever behind the wickets, and Hansen as long stop was invincible, only ono byo being recordod throughout the innings. In fact the whole of the eleven, with perhaps ono exception, never missed a chance, and the faultless Holding was highly commented upon, Eowliug was changed several times, Broad, Cargill and Leeks taking a turn, but Malcolm, who was in rare form, seemed to be the only one unplayable, After a few minutes spell, Greytown weut into the field, aud Leeks and Hanson first handled the willow for Masterton. Udy and Judd with the ball proved very disastrous, and the wickets of our'men fell fast and' furious, The players in the Hold acted like clockwork, and the wickot«keeping of tho (Jreytown skipper was a marvel, Malcolm.who went in first wicket down, kept his stand until the last wickot fell, and gave the bost exhibition of batting of thoday, Hecollarod the bowling of the two demons and did not give one chance for bis 23, not out—nearly half the total, Tremens dous applause greeted him as he left the wickotfl. None of the others madu the slightest st.>iid, and the innings otoaed for tho modest total of 48,
Being over sixty behind the winners, Masterton had to follow on, and they opened with an excellent stand. Hanson played carefully for 18,.and Malcolm again mad>) things merry by knocking the bowling around for 17. Leeks was comins on comfortabh when tho iunings was declared closed, leaving Greytown victorious on the first innings. The Udy and Judd Brothers took the honors in howling, and tho fieldin« of tho team was perfectiou itself, Bowse especially saving heaps of runs by his clevor performance at inidi wioket. A very funny incident occurred in the second innings for Masterton, Maloolm was wielding the willow and hit a ball from Udy, theleathertravelling up tho bat into the turned op sleeve of his shirt. Singing out to his partnor, ho quietly essayed a run, and, waiting until Hansen had reached tbe other wickots, coolly let the ball drop to the ground. The incident created much amusement, and although rarely witnessed wab perfectly justified,
A combined eleven of the Excelsior and Oriental clubs are to play the second Tradesmen on Thursday next, when the "boys" will be able to [show tbpir metal against seniors,
