MASTERTON R.M. COURT RETURNS.
Business for 1892. The return of the criminal and civil cases brought beforo tbo Maatortou R.M. Court, during tho year ending 81st of December, 1892, has just been compiled by Mrlbhctson, Clerk of tho Court. It shows that during the year tho number of persons taken into ouatody, summoned or apprehended, was: —males, 838; females, 17. Of this number 87 cases were discharged for want of evidence or prosecution, 15 were dismissed on their merits, six wcro committed for trial and fifteen were summarily convicted, Of thoso summarily dealt with ninety-four males and thrco females wero lined; sixteen males and two females were imprisoned in lieu of fine or surety, and twenty males and three females were peremptorily imprisoned. Two males wero bound over lo keep tbo peace, mvl throe were liborated under tho" First Offenders Probation Act," Twenty-six orders wore made during tbo year against males, and six against females. Sixty-four persons wore convicted and discharged with a oaution, only one ot the number boing a female. Tho aggregate amount sued for during tho twelve months was £3,894 lGs 31, and the amount recovered £1,861 14s Id. The offence for which the largest number of persons wore apprehended, was drunkenness, which claimed no less than 100 of the total, and singular lo say, not one case was discharged without conviction. .For breaches of borough by-laws, 88 persons were before tho Court; for larceny, 22; for breaches of the Rabbit Act, 10; for keeping unregistered dogs, lo; for common assault, 14; for wife desertion, 15; neglecting to attend parados as Volunteers, 10; illegally on premises, 7j wilful damage, 7; taking possession with intent to defraud, 7; lice in sheep, 7; breaches of the Koad Board by-laws, 7; neglecting to send children to school, 7; vagrancy, 7 ; lunacy, 6 ; prohibited, 0 ; raalioious injury to property, G ; obtaining goods under false protences, 0; obscene language, 5; children committed to Industrial school, 5 ; perjury, 3 ; neglectiug to maintain wife, 8 ; unlawfully in possession of native game, 2; breacbos of railway by-laws, 2; illegal voting at a Road Board meeting, 2; refusing to leave premises, 2 ; delaying in admitting police to licensed promises, 2; resisting police, 2 \ keeping open after licensor! hours, 2. For each of the following offences ! one case was before tho Court:— Illegally taking away a child; cruelty to animals; refusing to give up arms; maintenance of children; support of illegitimate child; throwing missiles; imposing on persons; unlawful games; refusing to quit liconsed promises; procuring liquor for prohibited person; selling liquor after hours.
In tho District Court ten civil cases were commenced during 1892; threo of them being tried before juries; one before a judge only; one adjourned till next sitting and fivo discontinued. Tho total amount sued for was £1,429 7s 9d, and the total amounts for which judgments were recorded was £25,
