Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

FRIDAY JANUARY 20, 1893.

Being inn extended title of the Wairarapa Daiiy, mm wmoii it is IDENTIOAI

The proposal made by the Mayor at the last meeting of the Borough Counoil, to approach Messrs Williams and Beetham, with a view to arranging for a water supply from tho Landsdowne reservoir, ,is ono which we have fre« queutly urged in the columns of this journal, and it is extremely satisfactory to find that it is teing taken up from an unexpected quarter. We shall be glad to givo Mr Pownall evory assistance in carrying through such a project, and even if we hazard ono or two suggestions pro hno publico, we hope to do so in such & manner that they will not be antagonistic to the scheme as outlined by the Mayor, His Worship appears to consider that tho reservoir will only give a surface supply in Maßterton; but thero is some reason to believe that it would give a pressure which would throw water over almost every building in the centre of the town. This is a point that could bo easily and inexpensively decided by almost any professional engineer or surveyor in the town and it is one that is very material, A surface supply is a good thing, but it would be hotter to have pipes laid into the town which would irrigate a garden or throw a stream over a building. We do not antioipate any financial dilßoulty over such a project. A supply from Landsdowne would be bo economical that the charges made under the Act to- consumers would covor interest on expenditure and working expenses, The general rates of the town would not be affected by a cheap scheme like this, and there is a possibility of it leading up to a substantial reduction in fire insurance premiums and were this to be brought about through the instrumentality of the present Mayor, wo phoqld regard him as benefaotor to the town. Mr M. Caselberg some years ago gave Masterton gas. .In vain we look for any substantial memento of any other Mayor who has ruled Masterton | Letus hope Mr Pownall will succeed where Mr Renall failed and be entitled to raiik as the second Mayor of Maßterton who has assooiated jiis name with a work of undoubted public utility,
