Annie or Kate Byrne, asiusjle woman of about 30 years, jumped from the jetty this evening with her infant, two years and threo months old, in her arms, Tho woman got bold of a pile and was rescued, but the child was drowned. Byrne came from Christchurch, ami had been a barmaid, but had recently been associated with low pooplo and drinking, It is believed that she was in the Beaclifle Asylum for BOiue rnontus, and in August last the police had her in custody for somo days on a charge of lunacy. Tho woman was taken to wharf to-night, and pointed out the place she leaped from, but tho body of the child could not be found,
