CORRESPONDENCE.

1 (to the editor wairarapa daily I TIMES,) Sir, —In its leading article of Dccembor 28th, headed " Shearing by Machinery," tlio Waiiwapu Mar makes uso of the following words. "The shearer of to-day probably makes a good chequo lor a few months but he is not over careful with his money after it is earned. As a rule (tho italics are mine) ho leaves his shed on the Saturday night and on the Monday morning wakes up to find that he has' blued the lot/ and that ho is in a worse position than when ho went to work." I huye no hesitation in stating from my knowledge of the facts that the " rule" laid down by the Wamrapa Star is a deliberate misstatement and consequently a gross slander upon bard-working young follows who arc largely thesons of our country settlers, It is perfectly true that in years gone by the shearer's cheque was too often exchanged for the beer pot, but everybody else except your purblind contemporary has noticod with pleasure the greut change for the better which has taken place and that our shearers can now clmllengo comparison in physique or behaviour with any body of working men in town or country, No better proof of this could be offered than the universal commendation bestowed by Australians upon New Zealand shearers who have visited iheiu year after year and done their work. Let the Editor of the Wairarapa Star look nearer home and realise that not so long ago it would have been dangerous to throw stones in this particular direction. I am, &C., Observer,
