Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 4, 1893.

Being the extended titib of tub Wairabapa Daily, with which it is idenmoai,

■ Bomb people entertain the idea that a Governor is rather a luxury than a necessity—a sort of lay figure used for purely ornamental purposes. We have bad in New Zealand Governors good, bad and indifferent, but in many instances they have proved themselves of value, and one and' all have tried to giro the Colony an adequate return for the incomes whioh . they drew from it. It is as yet, early to say bow Lord Glaßgow should be otad in the catalogue of New Zealand "Excellencies." We know the weak points of his predecessors, but as yet we have not discovered bis , particular frailty. There seems a reasonable prospect of bis turning out »success, but were he to fail, the Colony would owe a debt to him for bringing Lady Glasgow to our shores; Lady Glasgow is interesting herself now in forming a "New Zealand Mothers' Union," and as she is the first lady in tbe land, and is ovidentlv in earnest in her undertaking, it mus't suoceed. Whatever Lady Glasgow does must to a very threat extent become the fashion and in this instancy a very good and excellent thing is to become fashionable. The following description of the movement on the face of it will carry the approbation of fathers and mothers throughout the Colony. The object of the union is to awaken in mothers a seriEO of their great responsibility as mothers, in the training of thoir boys and girls, who will bo the future fathers and mothers of New Zealand; and to oigoniso in every place a band of mothers who will unite in prayer, aud seek by their own example to lead thoir families in purity and holiness of lite. Mothers of all ranks of life who are enrolled in the Mothers' Union ore members, and all are asked to help forward in every way they can the work of the union. No subscription is asked from members, but those ladies who subsoribi not loss than one shilling a year to the expenses of this union are subscribing members. Tho following arc tho rules :-Keniembering that my ohildreir are dedicated to God lh Baptism, and that my duty is to train them for His servico, I promise to try, by God's help-1. To mako them obedient, puro, and gentle. 2, To watch over their words, and prevent evil speaking, slandor,

or less yioibu ! 8 aiid'irreligiduß, desire to see their: dhildren, ghided' by rules auoli 88 those wjiwb have been quoted. They will;lißtert to: the voice of tho first lady in the Hariri when she calls their attention to; them, and will treat both hei and tbem'with sincere rcspEot. Theoohditions lor bringing up ohildren are, not altogether favourable in a country like; this. Fathers and niotb.ors.have often too many cares on their hands to give proper attention to theiroffspringj 1 and they too often leave the'.iatter'.'to bring themselves up. But the instinct to see the children grow up into good men and women is. there, and if tlw Sooiety which Lady Glasgow is inaugurating tends to revive and develop this instinct, there.' .will bo many in all parts of the Colony who will say from their hearts "God bless lady Glasgow," .'. : : ......
