[By Telegraph.—Proas Association],

Weuinoton, Saturday.

At the inquest held at Newtown to-day on the body of the infant' named White, who died on Thursday under such circumstances that the doctor refused to give a certificate. The midwife who assisted at the child's birth stated that its mother was a single woman, and when it was a few weeks old she gave it to a woman named Mrs Favattto adopt, paying her £5. Tbe obild at itß birth was fine and healthy, but it now presented a vary emaciated appearance, and was in foot smaller than when it left her house in July last, Dr Alexander deposed that tbe child was broaght to him by a man named White- at the beginning of the month, suffering from a broken arm, whioh he said had been caused by lifting the obild out of bed by its arm. Tbe ohild appeared to he well nourished, but was very dirty. Some days afterwards the child was again brought to bis surgery to be treated for a nasty bruise over the right temple, whioh White oould not satisfactorily account for. The obild died in a few days, but the doctor refused to give a certificate and reported the matter to the police. On making a post mortem he found the body very much emaciated, In his opinion death was caused by effusion of blood on tbe brain, brought on by fall or blow, During one of the visits White mentioned that the child's life was insured and said he would benefit to' the extent of £2O by its deatb.
