[ESTABLISPD 1878] Being the extended title of the Wairarapa Daiiy, with which ii is IDENTICAL
At a general meeting of members of the Mastertun Pastoral and Agricultural Association held yesterday, a prominent member complained of the lack of interest taken in its affairs, as evidenoed by the paucity of attendance at tho gathering, This may partly have arisen from the time when it was called, but after discounting this drawback it is plain that it is difficult to get members together to do the necessary workol the Association,
The reason is that the Bottlers of Wflirarapa North have not been quite a happy family in the matter of Shows, The Hasterton Association was started in opposition to the views of some of the loading atopkowners of the district, aud as a natural oonso> quence many of them to ibis day hold aloof from it,
When the difficulty was originally pointed out, it was said that the farmers of the disiriot, if they pulled together and worked together, were independent of aid from larger stockowners. This was true to a certain extent, but it is evident, that if in the southern portion of the district all classes of settlers pull together to make a Show, and in the northern district only certain ecotion? of settlers pull together the advantage must be in favour of. the former. The experience of the past two or three years has at least demonstrated this lobe the case, and it would seem now that the future of the Master ton Show is imperilled, unless the larger stock' ownerß become supporters of it. Personally there is, we believe, a cordial feeling between the larger stookowneraand the farmers and there is no reason why they should not work together for the benefit of the district. Bo far the work of the Association has to a very large extent devolved upon the shoulders of farmers and of Beth tiers li|e Mr W. IjOwes who are closely identified with farming interests, Perhaps an undue burden has been placed upon them and it would be a very proper thing for them to call upon the larger stockholders to join in with them and take a-fair Bhare of a work whioh is supposed to be in the interests of the district as a whole. There is perhapa a hatchet to be buried and an old grievance to be forgotten, but surely this amongst intelligent men should not be regarded tts an insuperable difficulty. It would be possible to piok a splendid team of public men in the distriot for running either a Pastoral Association. or a Racing Club, if leading settlers of all classes would only pull together,
