MAURICEVILLE SPORTS.
[Bx Our SrEoiAi. Reporter,] The annual gathering of the Manrieevillo Athkio Club held on Tuesday on the Sports Ground, Manriceville, was in every way a thorough success, and the management ia to be . congro.lnlated.npon the result of their r' efforts, to provide an enjoyable outThe ground, which ia situated at Mauriceville West, and is about two miles from the railway station, looked very attractiva with its green sward and picturesque surrpundiiigs-on one side a nice plantation with cooling stream, on tho other perched on-a slight eminence the Lutheran Church, while in the front, rose tho district school, a rathor fine looking building, and all around within oosy distance were low lying hills crowned with native bush. The sports groundseven acres it ia—was thus an admirable rotreat for a summer's day, and viewed from the road the scono was very pretty, when the crowd of holiday makers had assembled. ricoville—the day of the year—and the call to pleasure had been right ; -.*y}l 4j okayed, for there gathered nearly five hundred merry souls from over hill and dale. The gatekeeper, forsooth, established n record, mid twenty-one pounds was the .generous total of his Wings. ™ First we had a stroll round tho booths, In one wo iound Mr John Anderson of tho Eketnlwna Hotel, who with two nimble assistants, were kept" hard at it" throughout the entire thirsty day. Next we visited Mr C. E. Brenniuhl's luncheon tent, and a very good repast he gave us, Then we spent a sixpence with Mrs W. Vile, who seemed lo be doing a rows ing twdo a; a toy, fruit, and lolly stall. Near at hand, 1 too, we noticed the speoulativo " spinning jenny" worked bj Mr Mulrie on most philanthropic principles, wherebyan investor were he daring enough might speedily • win a fortune. Then passing on with a word to Constable Roche, that respected controller of thepublio's pranks whose mission to-day was peaco and goodwill, we turned our attention to the sports and full ot interest we found them. Most of the items were well contested, and the competitors displayed , much good humour in their rivalry, fife The wrestling matches seemed to vT)e regarded with almost more general interest than anything else in tho programme. Both contests were in the Cumberland style. The first, air open event for heavy weights, was easily won by T.Tuohy of Pahiatua, ■ft. Carroll being second. D, McKenzie and F. Kuratner also competed. The latter in drawing oil was unfortunate enough to be pitted against Tnohy, who, of course, managed lo dispose of him, Had he been paired with either McKenzie or Carroll there is little doubt he would have secured second place, In the Jight weight match for men of list 71bs and under Halberg beat D. McKenzio by 2 falls to 1, Donovan beat J. McKenzie by 2 to 1 and Halperg by 2 to O.Gun'ther beat Carroll by 2 to 0 j and in tho final between the last two men remaining in, Guuther beat Donovan by 2 falls to], tho former thus carrying off tho event. , Before giving the dotailed programme of results we must not omit "to mention that the Greylowu Brass Band of ten instruments, under their popular conductor Mr M. E. Varnham, did much to add to tho cheer" fulness of tho day's proceedings. The officers of tho Club, Mr G. Gunderson (President); Messrs John Bannister and J. F, Heckler, VicePresidents, Mr G. Franklin, Secretary ; Messrs F. Knmmer.P. Neilson, C. flanborg and G, Day, judges; and Mr R, Franklin, the starter, were one and all simply indefatigable. Both . individually and collectively they doBOi've all praise for their administration of affairs on the ground. Mr James Cottiss also must have a special word of mention. Although not on the Committee, he was as energetic and helpful as anjbody, Mr W, Jcsson, too, lent good aid in various ways,
