CARTERTON BOROUGH BOUNCIL.
A meeting of the above Council wns held yesterday (Wednesday), Mr A, Booth, Mayor, in tho chair. Before vacating the Mayoral Chair, ho thanked tho councillors for tho good feeling which had oxisUd between,them during tbe term of his
- ■ office, and hopo 1 that tho earuo good yfl fpclinc would exist during his successor's office. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to tbe retiring Mayor. Mr G. W. Deller then made the usual declaration and was formally declared Mayor of Carterton, after which he returned thauks for tbe honour conferred upon him. Mr Willie Moore also took the formal oath, and was duly declared a councillor, The Treasurer reported a debit balance of £95. It was resolved that the rate collector be instructed to take proceedings Against all defaulting ratepayers, Mr A. Armstrong wrote, complaining about the gate being left unfastened leading to the gravel pit adjoin-
ing his property, 'Qfc The roadman was instructed to lock the gate, and it was deoided to inform Mr Armstrong that the Council do not hold themselves responsible in keeping the gate locked.
Mra'Hamilton and Mrs Wilson to havo their names placed on Tthe rate roll. The applications wore granted. It was moved by Councillor Eaglo and seconded by Councillor Kemble, that Councillor Wakelin's offer io raped to a gravel pit he declined. A further request of Councillor Wakelin re sinking wells for fire extinguishing purposes was allowed to stand over for further consideration. Councillors Bayliss and Eaglo wero appointed to sign cheques in conjunction with the MayorAfter the business of the meeting was concluded a social gathering washeld to which the representatives of the press were cordially invited, ■ After tho healths of the retiring Mayor, the newly-eleotod mayor, the liewly-elected councillor, and Mr Wolters (the clerk), the press nt toasted, Mr.Wm, Philpot, representative of the Wairarapa Daily Times, replying on behalf of.the paper which he represented and also on behalf of the other representatives who were unavoidably absent.
