We were interested in learning yesterday from a gentleman who was one of the committee at the Steen Entertainments recently held in the Masterton Theatre, that "TheKnigbt's Tour" which seemed to be an almost supernatural feat on the part, of Madame Steen is really only a very clever test of iutelligeuoe and memory. The system by which the intricate movements of the piece is governed is to be found among published chess problems, dating nearly a hundred years back, It will be remembered that Mr Steen acknowledged at the outset of his entertainment, that most of the apparently inexplicable aohievi-ments were really only the tricks of an expert, But at the time they seemed eo wonderful that it was asking his audience almost to believe too much, when they were told that it was. all more triokery. However, wo are no* more inclined to agree with Mr Steen than we were then; although we mustat the same time pay both Mr and Mrs Steen tho compliment of saying that their deceptions wero remarkably smartly carried out.
