SECOND EDITION Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1892.

BeINO 188 EXTENDED TITLE OF THE WiiauupA Daily, wub which it is IDENTIOAI, ■

Wb have rec'uivod a copy of tho report and balance sheet of the Gear Meat Preserving ana Freezing Company, of New Zealand, for the year ended on the 30th of November last, and which is to be presented to tho annual meeting early in January next. It is gratifying to find that, not withstanding the vicissitudes which tho frozen meat traffio baa not, as yet, entirely outgrown, the results for tho past year are entirely satisfactory. _ Country settlers owe much to these big meit export Companies, for have they not first of all raised the price of sheep throughout the Colony, and secondly improved the value of oattle. The prioe of the latter waß never more buoyant in the Wairarapa than at the present time, and though the improvement is in a measure dite to the aotive demand for stocking new country, it also arises from the exports whioh have'year by year thinned off surplus stock.

It is but a few years ago that one or two buyers made their own prioes for Btook of all kinds in this distriot, and these prices were very hard on the grower, Now the big companies BMid buyerß all over the district who compete keenly one with the other for supplies so that the grower gets the full value for all lie-sella. The Gear Meat Company is aotive in ihe good work and deserves the .beat wishes of settlers of all classes. '

The concern ia a tig one, with a paid up capital of £40,000, with lands, buildings, and plantvaluedat£d2,B94, a reserve.fond of £12,000. and an in. surance reserve if • £9,000. During the year it has divided a profit of ten per cent.'upon itu'"paid«up l capital, put a tho^and'pounds to its reserve fupd and carried fbnw<j <iver ; thousand pounds towards the next year's profit and : loss aooount.

; These figures are very suggestive of sound and substantial business, and when, we bear in mind tho number of unsatisfactory Companies whioh .from time to time have been floated in the Wellington Provincial district, which l)avobeeoAl9;Bfottippul)]!o sods

discredit.to the .Colony, we take some little pride in finding tliat there are joint stock enterprises, which have on j the other bind made their mark and which show: that there are oapable busineßs raen in the Empire City, who have done groat thingsfor thead vance- j njont ot both town and country, We trust the Gear Company will continue to prosper and that it will never pay oither a or a smaller dividend than that which it has divided during tlii) past year, .A larger dividend would mean'possibly an undue profit at the expense of growers, a smaller one a contraction of business.
