WAIRARAPA NORTH COUNTY COUNCIL.

Engineers' Report The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wairarapa North County Council which was to have been held yesterday afternoon, lapsed for want of a jdporuui. The Councillors present ■ were F. von lteden, Eli Smith, D, Guild and Cockl)urn<Hood. The Engineer's reportfor tho month is as follows Masterton Biding.—Waingawa to Camp Road,—Contract No. 5. extending the Waipouabridgo embankments and forming a path for foot passenger accommodation, is now sufficiently -r forward to allow of the track beiog opened to the public, the remainder of the work required to fulfil the contrnot will bo completed by tho next ordinary sitting of the Council. A fresbot in tho Waingawa river on the -itb ult. removed a small quantity of the recently repaired approach at tbo north end of the bridge by Bering below the timber backing, cutting out the gravel, This was attended to on the following day when carts were employed ana the damage rectified without any inconvenience to tho public.

Te Ore Ore to Bidetord Road. - Although slow progress still continues tornado with the works on this line thffcontractor displays a more tracts able disposition of late and appears inclined to tackle the arrears of work which ho formerly refused to recognise. On tho occasion of an inspection of tho ground yesterday he expressed his intention to complete everything required by tho end of tho current month, and hoped in future to continue the contract more satisfactorily and with less friction than of late.

Wainuioru llidino.—Mnstertou to Waimata Road.—The formation on the table lauds portion of this .road is now being performed, and upon its completion the metalling of the 22 chains nearßlairlogie Junction will be undertaken together with the annual surface repairs on the main line within the Hiding boundaries. Castlepoint Eidiso.—Masterton to Waimata Road.--With a view to forwarding matters in this district, tho Overseer lias gone through to measure up and allocate the metalling I'umJ.according to tho requirements "cfPie different lengths of main road, Tho permanent mon will be placed in the pits quarrying and otherwise preparing stone for the carters who will b8 employed when a sufficient quantity is ready for them to start work with. Akitio Riding.— Masterton to Waimata Road.—Men have been employed lately in opening up the cuttings in the Aohanga hill which for some months pastbavebeen closed by jslips and other extraordinary damage. At the request of Cr Handyside the owners recently visited tho locality to direct the men in the performance of the work. Eketahuna Riding.—Eketahuna to Tinui road,—An Eketahuna Road Board contract for metalling 48 chains of this road is now in course of execution under tliß Council's supervision, but owing to the broken weather the contractor had not of late beon able to do moro than prepare the formation and metal pits for starting the work. Riding,-Eketahuna to Tinui Road,-Contract No. 88 (constructing a toll house at Tawataia). This contract is well advanced, the buildings having been sufficiently finished on tho 3rd ult, to allow Mr Pratt, the toll keeper, to enter into occupation and release the permanent roadman who had temporarily been doing duty in that capacity. It is, however, to be regretted that through the incompetency of the bricklayer it will he necessary to pull down and rebuild the chimnoy as at present great inconvenience issuflnred through its defective construction. The contractor is taking the necessary steps to havo this rectified with the least possible delay, Contract No, 26 (282 chains of metalling more or less), Thia contract which embraces the metalling of tho Alfredton end of the road to the Junction with district line was held over for completion from last season, lias again been resumed and during theJast fortnight a short additional has been added to the already metalled road. A further contract (No 35) of 36 chains of metalling, an extension from the Junotion with tho District road towards Tiraumea has been advertised and tenders for this and No. 36, an ombankment and culvert further along the same road, will bo laid before the Council for consideration at this sitting. Contract No. 814,—4$ miles of road repairs is making good progress and should be finished by the end of the current month,. A small contract amounting to £8 has also recently been completed for ropairing the ford cuttings into the Tiraumea river as well as repairing li miles of road between Mr Napier's and the Alfredton township. Aweedion road district,—Pursuant of the Council's instructions of the 23rd ultimo, a contract has been entered upon for performing certain urgent repairs to this road, and the work, which was put in hand a fortffls*\igo, will be finished by tho end of this month or early in January, Whareama Road District:—The bridge required to connect the recently-made road across Tatham'a flats with the old formation, has beon constructed during the month, and the now. length is now open to tho general traffic of tho Coast. The failure of one of the old brid' ges on the Kohiwai flats has necessitated fresh timbers being ordered to replace it, which will bo delivered on the ground by the next waggon going down tho Coast. The Overseer, with the assistance of the roadmen, will build the new bridgo when the materials are landed at the site. In other respects the East Coast road is now in fair working order throughout.
