PUBLIC MEETING AT CARTERTON.

The meeting convened by the Mayor (Mr A. Booth) was held last night at the Council Chambers, Can erton, to take into consideration tlio necessity of doing away with tho drain running through the towu. There wore about thiity ratepayers present, Mr Win. Booth stated that n doubt the drain was a nuisance, but thought that it would be unwise to fill ib in Rb present. The only water (besides smko water) which ran into the main drain came fiom Mr Gballis' land, at the north end of the town, and from a drain by the Foresters' Hall which proceeds from the show grounds, He also stated the coat of maintaining the drain sinco it became a borough had cost about £2B a yoar, but that cost has arisen chiefly in repairing where the drain had been oovered by private individuals, in the early days of the settlement, and further, that if tho drain was done away with it would bo a great detriment to Mr Challis and otheis, and would give them a good claim on the Borough for damages, Mr Callister considered that tho drain was a blessing instead of a curse, for if it was not for tho drain there would be no means of getting rid of tho stonn water, and in timeß of heavy rain many places would bo ontirely swamped. The Mayor stated that the covering of the drain had cost about £BOO.

Mr S. Hart advocated that a portion of tho drain should bo made a perraauiency by putting in a certain length of pipes every year. In answor to Mr Fairbrother, the Mayor stated that the Council had no intention of covering any more of the drain, The Borough had no funds to do it.

Mr W. J. Lindop drew the attention of the Councillors present to the state of the water in the J?iro Brigade well, as being most filthy, Mr Win. Booth moved and Mr Callister seconded, that in the opinion of this meeting there is no need of any alteration being made in the main drain, and that no householder be allowed to drain any but surface water into the drain, Mr Downai'd moved that in the opinion of this meeting the Council be asked to keep the reserve solely for the reoreation of the people, Seoonded by Mr A. Armstrong and carried,

Mr Callister moved and Mr Deller seconded, that in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable that a deputation wait upon the Government with the view of getting a piece of land next to the Library to build a Public Hall on, and that the Borough Councillors petition the Government on the matter.

A vote of thanks to' the Mayor brought the meeting to a olose.
