Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18, 1892.
Being the extended title.of the WiiRiKAPA Daily, with which it Is '_____ IDENTIOAI
Wuen the first Show, of tho Wellingj ton Pastoral and Agricultural Assooiawas held, we pointed, out two I drawbacks which threatened the future.of the Society. . One. was the unsuitable okaiacter of tho site on which,it was held; the other, that Wellington was a commercial rather than an Agricultural and Pastoral centre. The latter objection was overcome by certain Wairarapa settlers, who did know something about Shows, taking upon themselves almost
;he entire .management of the Show
and the former baa been met by thi purchase of a more convenient siti nearPetone, ; At first, ohances* wen against the Show; but now, it ii working under better qondjtjons, anc we regard its future as fairly assured There are reasons which make ue
regret the existenoe of a Wellington Pastoral Show., It is a good thing for the Colony to have one Metropolitan Show.; but tho success of.Wei-
ington necessarily kills 1 this go [ring. It is intended'to rival Ohrii
church, and although no one can ohjeot to fair rivalry, it would have
been a graoious thing if Wellington had been content to let Christchuroh run the Metropolitan Show of New Zealand, Then, again, tho Wairarapa
lers.who have been the life am
boul of the Wellington Show, have losl caste in this district by the energetic manner- in whioh they have workec it up. Mr George Beetham, for example, forfeited his seat in the House partly because members fif big family supported the. Wollitig|on'' Show and ! neglected the local one, They had, oi course, a perfect right to do this and probably bad excellent reasons for all
'that they did do, Still the outcome of it was the loss to the : settlers in this district of their representation. in Parliament, and for this and other 1 reasons' we consider the Wellington Show has been a dear bargain to this district,"" :
There is, however, a contra side to Ihe account. Growing' sheep and oattle is a business which is only profitable wben it is conducted on business lines. The settlers whjo have interested themselves jn working up the Wellington Show' no doubt
reoogriise that in time they will be I able to buy stud.stock. there without going for it as heretofore to Christ-' church, also that they, will be able to J sell to a limited extent their own surplus stock at the annual show of
the Society; From a business .point of viow they may reap an advantage from the Wellington Sooiety and they are the bestjudges of how they shall manage their business, .•-■;•:
