SECOND EDITION
Being the extended title of ids WAißiiim Daily, with which it is IDENTICAL
Ve published in our last issue a statesent from the New Zealand Trade leview, showing that on the twelve lonths, ended the 30th of September aafc, there was a falling off of produce xport amounting to £470,000, This Deans that last year a sum of monev, ?hicb, would have kept five thousand nen in regular employment, did not ome to New Zealand. Had it reached is it would have absorbed the uumployed; without it the unemployed ncrcaso and multiply, in spite of all he shifts resorted to in order to pro■ide work for them, For the paßt wo years the business men of New Sexland have preached and protested .gainst the changes which the present Ministers have forced upon the ouotry and in which the) ake so much pride and de< ight. They have been told that thest hanges would limit production ant lecrease the wages fund of tbi jolony. The party in power bai aughed to scorn the wisdom of th< nost intelligent end enterprising mei n the Colony. The country has lis. cned to the blatant philosophy o oud-voio*d men who, having provei hemselves incapable of managinj heir own affairs, have undertaken ti raiisact the business of the Colony a arge, and has been deaf to the warn ngs of capable and experienced colo lists whose careers have been a war anty bothfor their integrity and intel igence, The beginning of the end is uoi apparent, and the tide which bore th iarty on to fortune is turning, Out idooonditionß for New Zealand pre luce have been so favourable that w. lad hoped to see the Colony stan irm despite all misgovernment, butfig ires, which do not lie, prove that th Jolony lias drifted, that capital ha ieen frightened, that the wage fun. Ms decreased and exports of produc lave .contracted. This coutractioi uust be followed by a dearth of em iloyment, and can any one deny tha hiß evil is at our doors, Never in th listory of New Zealand were suol trenuousand systematic efforts mad iy a Government to And work for th inemployed, and yet in spite of thes< ;rcat exertions the number of per ons out of work increases daily am he strain on the charitable aid fund f New Zealand is greater than ere; t was before. And.we have not yet reached tb rorst stage which we have to gi brough, This is tho time of th 'ear when surplus labour is usually ii lemand, and we may look forward t he ensuing winter when the'i'drinani rill be loss, with feelings of diemaj .'ho Government cannot reverse it lolioy; it cannot command the con idence of the men who can alone hel it out of its difficulties, and it is un likely to surrender its position until verfjiot ffoln the WMf o'ommainj
it to'retire. As yet the country is still, infatuated, still more or less imder an illusion;many.men still believe that under the new order of affairs wages will be:higher, taxes lighter, and hours of labour shorter, They were promised these things at! the general election two years ago and they were foolish enough to believe the pledges that were given to them. They oannot say that as yet the good things that they expected have come to them, but they may still have faith in their being on the road. The Government is doing its best for theui, but if the policy of the Government, the polioy by whioh it is tied hand and foot; by which it must | stand or fall, be'a wrong one, all the efforts of Ministers to mend matters must result in failure,
