Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1892.

Beinq tbe-exibnded titm of the Wairakapa Daily, wun which it ib IDENTICAL

The Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association iB sounding a key note which should be as musio in the ears of Masterton settlers. Tlie Company proposes to further redeem o pledge which it gave when it wan first organised to foster local industries, It is, we are informed, prepared to start within the ourrentyear, under certain reasonable conditions: (1) a Gutter Factory; (2) Bacon Curing; (3) a Jam Faotory; (4) a Pickle Factory, HVe need not dwell upon the importance of eaoh and all of these important industries, or dilate upon the stimulus tbey will give to labour, more especially to that healthiest and best kind of labour which is performed in the open air; we need not point out that such industries will increase tho trade and prosperity of the town and district, and enhance the value of property; beoause all these considerations are so self-evident that each and all of our readers oannot fail to appreciate them at their fall value.

The points upon which we would rather dwell are two in number: (1) the condition upon whioh tho Company is prepared to start these undertakings ; and (2) the absolutecprtainty that, provided thecondition beoomplied with, the enterprises will he speedily and effectively launohed, First of all, the condition for whioh the Company stipulates, is some assurance from Settlers, that they will supply a Buffioieaoy of produoe to keep the faotones going. With this object the Company is about to invite settlers to declare that, in the event of their starting thcuo enterprises, what support it is likely to receive from them. Owners of cows will be asked to state how much milk they can supply, proprietors of orchards will be invited to indicate what fruit tbey can grow for a factory, and gardeners will bo requested to give an estimate for vegetables suitable for pickling, The suocesa of the whole affair will depend very muoh on the responses given to the questions whioh are about to be addressed by circular to the settlers of the district. If the latter display the spirit and enterprise which characterises the Company, several, if not all, of the enterprises will bo speedily under way; but if settlers are careless and indifferent, and negleot the opportunity which is placed before them, they can depend upon it the factories will not be started.

On the other hand the bomjides ol tlio company is unquestionable. Any pledge made by it will be fulfilled to the letter, and if on the one hand the publio is asked to give an assurance, the company on its part goes; further than this and offers a guarantee. We trust this project will be talked over and disoussed throughout the district because every man, woman and child may be interested in it, involving as it does labour adapted to the young and old of either Be;. We shall be content ourselves to see even one factory out of the four started during the current year, beoauso we know that it will take sopje settlers a considerable time to realise the advantages of Btich enterprises and the absolute necessity of their individual exertion and co-operation to bring them about, It would, ipdeed, bo,a

misfortune for the district, if none of the four were pulled off owing to the apathy of residents. On our part w will do all we can to obtain and publisli any "information desired by oar readers on these important undertakings and our columns will be open to a free discussion of their probable advantages or disadvantages. Wesliall view the success ■of one or more ol these proposals as the best piece of good fortune which has come to Mastenon for many a long day, and we trust to find our readers regarding them in a similar spirit.
