"Graceful Unblief."
[to the editor, waibaiupa daily TIMES,] Sir,—Your leader of tbe 18tb insfc. is headed " Graceful Unbelief," and ilk, it you mix up the late Lord nndM. Benan. French "gracefulnessseems to fasoinate you verymuch, especially I should'say the gracefulness of unbelief. For, some months ago, you had a leading artiols mixing up General Booth and General Boutanger. to the disgust of your Christian readers. Your mental capa • city failed to couvey to you the i'uot that General Booth is one of the greatest philanthropists ot this century, whilst General Boulanger was only a French libertine, who shot himself on the grave of his mistress, A parallel between the .•" Brava General" and Gambetta \vfco was shot by his mistress would have had soma sense in it. In your leader of the 15th inst. you see a parallelism between Lord Tennyson and M. Benan the graceful French infidel, The parallelism is similar to that which might be supposed between good and evil-evil polished with French gracefulness. • You state .''wearenota re« ligious organ," and you oloae your leader with tho gratuitous assertioirAjit M. Benan has made an assault sn Christianity under whioh the Christian religion is reeling still.' M. Benau's assault on Christianity has .had about as.jnuch effect as Voltaire's, who said that Christianity was founded by twelve men—the apostles—but he, one man, would destroy it, and for this purpose set up a printing press at Fernay to demolish Christianity. That press was afterwards in use at Geneva to print bibles. Another demolishes of Christianity, Colonel Ingersoll ten years ago predicted tbt "Ten years from this time two theatres will be built for one churoh," A short time ago the following message was sent to Ingersoll, "Dear Colonel, — The time is up. The Methodists are now building four churohes every day, one every six hours, Please venture upon another prediction for the year." So muoli for the assaults of French and American infidels. The Christianity that "reels" under suoh assaults never had any Divine vitality in it. Seeing that you are note., "religious organ," it would be wise®, your part to refrain from disgusting the common sense of those of your readers who are religious in tho - Christian sense. lam, etci, William Alexander,
