Being toe extended title of the Wairarapa Daily, wiin whioh it is IDRNTIOAt
We do not know whether John Eigg was made an Honourable on account of his peculiarly plebeian name, or whether the Government discovered a pearl in a common oyster shell; but the selection of suoh a name for distinction reminds us of a little incident which occurred at Home some few years ago, A noble Duke, at tho solicitation of his nephew, who was a Conservative whip, consented to oil the political machine by giving a series of Parliamentary dinners. In the list of proposed names of guesta to be bidden to tho first banquet appeared the awful name of" Wiggins." " Hang it George," said the Duke, " I cannot have a man of the name of Wiggins in my house; strike him out I" The whip, however, did not like to eliminate the name as it represented a very staunch vole, and for some days cast about for a way of getting over the difficulty. Fortune favoured him, for Wiggins announced his intention of taking a trip to the Continent, and secured the necessary " pair" to enable him to leave bis Parliamentary duties, On the day he was to leave London the clever whip sent him a ducal invitation feeling certuin that it would have to be declined. However, ducal missives were a new experience for Wiggins and he at once postponed his trip to tho Continent and accepted the invitation. The whip was in despair, but when the dinner came off he carefully placed Wiggins at the foot of the table, as far as possible from his noble Host. But at the close of the banquet the Duke, to the horror of his nephew, sauntered dovn to the other ond of the table, sat down, and began talking to Wiggins. When the guests had departed the Duke said, " who was that little fat man I was speaking to " and the whip had to admit that the person indicated was the tabooed Wiggins, " Well," said the Duke, '• he seemed the most sensible man of the lot, you can ask him to the other dinners." Since then the party has endorsed the favour-? able opinion formed by the Duke by making Wiggins tt Baronet. Wiggins in spite of his name is no longer plebeian, If a Wiggins can become a Baronet in Conservative England to what dizzy pinnacle of glory may not a liigg reficli in democratic New Zealand, Sir John Bigg, Premier, and possibly Agent-General ia quite-on the cards. As demooracy in this Colony becomes slowly but surely eclipsed by socialism Ballance will get oat of date and even Seddon will be too slow and behind the times. In the new era whioh will dawn upon New Zealand men like John' Bigg will be the top blossoms of the political tree. Our friend with the plebeian name can safely throw on one side his composing stiok and resign his case, for bigger game lies in his pathway. John Bigg, compositor, Jms become tho Hon John Eigg—" gentleman " according to the declaration of the Government organs, The ball is at his feet and ho will probably know bow to kick it, May he live to ripen as many othe socialists have ripened, into a good a;id trustworthy Conservative, and become a shield and defender of the Legislative Council when bis entbuai katic but less fortunate fellow workers desire 'to suppress that very necessary 'institution. : ' '
