Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

THURSDAY, OOTOBER 27, 1892.

Being the extended title of-the Waiiurapa Daily, with which it is IDEHHOAL

To-morrow is Demonstration Day, but as yet we have beard of no one in this district expressing' the slightest intention of Ueraonstrating or oven of eacrificing a day's wages on the altar of labour, In our exchanges frotu various parts of the Colony, we have not noticed—outside of the big towns - that preparations aro being made for a suitable celebration of Demonstration Day, and it is evident that as yet this new anniversary is unappreciated by the general body of New Zealanders. In Wellington of course, ss a bead centre of democraoy, an organised effort is being attempted to ien dec the'day memorable, and a Sports Committee has prepared a programme. Wa learn from a Wellington contemporary that an enthusiast bas contributed a tin ol biscuits for the proposed gathering and that three gbnerous publioans] have offered refreshments for "the performers at the entertainment," It i is not said who the performers are, but the information is given that the Hon. Mr Seddon and the Hon, Mr Bigg are invited to deliver "short" addresses on the ground. Whether the something "short," which the benevolent Bonifaces have promised, will precede or follow the addresses we do not know. No doubt the affair will pass off satisfactorily, but at the lame time time it is evident tbat the anniversary will not be regarded generally as a fet6 day in thp Empire City, that excursion train) and excursion steamers will not run in all directions, and that outside thspecial organisation but little interest will be taken in the demonstration. We have already a sufficiency of public holidays in this Colony, and public opinion will not stand the additional loading which the Demonstration people desire to impose, Practically, Demonstration must he bracketed on to some other public holiday, such as the Prince of Wales' birthday; or it, will shortly become as exlinot as the moa,
