BHHO' THE EXTINBED HTM OP THE WiHURATi DAIIiY, WITH WHICH II IS IDENTICAL
Mr Buchanan, in his speech at Carterton, -referred to his recent trip across tile globe. It is a disliu j advantage for a public representative to be in touch with other countries and colonies, and by personal observation to be able to show his constituents that in SHch an' important industry as fruit growing the Tasroanians are experts and New ZeaUnders are bunglers, Probably no public man in tbis colony has bad as wideand varied opportunities as have fallen to the lot of Mr Buchanan, for studying the local industries suitable to our soil and climate, end settlers in the Wairarapa eleotorato who follow bis counsel are pretty oertain to get good results from any little ventures which they may put forth, Turning to politics Mr Buchanan displayed that fairness and clearness of vision for which he has beon ever conspicuous. He extended certain qualified praise to the new labour members, and pointed out the few merits discoverable in tho new labour legislation. Of coureo he could say | little in favour of tho Land and Income Tax, but one statement made by bim is significant. Though he is one of those people whom the Government have been trying to catch, be estimates that he will have to pay no more under the land and Income Tax than bo has been acouitomed to pay under the Property Tax, This means that the birds which the Government tried to net are not caught, and the ones they did not care to "lime," Buch as the Canterbury farmers, are the victims. We were pleased to notice that Mr Buchanan spoke strongly against the filching of the freehold title by the present Government and we belieye with him that settlers throughout New Zealand will yet make a stand to save freeholds irom obliteration.
We- can scarcely agree, with the member for the Wair.aiapa in the partial confidence expressed by him in tbe Labour Bureau. It is true he said a word of warning about it being used as a political machine but we fear that no Government will be virtuous enough to refrain from using it for such a purpose when an election is imminent and we question whether any Ministry should be in a position to influence many thousands of votes by promises of reward- or threats of punishment. Mr Buchanan is one of the few faith' ful representatives who are left to,
guard the interests of country settlers, against the aggressive /organisations of the big towns of .the Colony. He has done his duty as one of the small minority whiob has checked but not stayed the attempt of the Radicals to ohange the conditions of existence in New Zealand, so that settlers shall bear all burdens and carpet-baggers and adventurers shall exeroiße all power.
