Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1892.

Being ins extended iiiie of- this Waikarapa Daily, with whioh it is IDENTICAL.

The twelio disciples of ihe Liberal party chosen by. Ministers to sit on the Legislative Counoil are under discussion from one end of the Colony to the other, and so fur the criticisms are fairly favourable. The objections raised againßt the chosen onta are comparatively weak, It is said that thero aro too many printers in the sitting which has, at last, been hatched out and it is contended that the appointment of two of the very lucky men infringes the spirit, if not the letter, of theJDisqualification Aot. We do not suppose the Government care twopence the spirit of ; the Act ii they can hold their own as regards the letter, and how on earth, when so maoy of their followers are provided for out of the public purso, could they select twelve Lords without touohingoneortivowho were virtually their employk We gather from Ministerial organs sufficient reasons for the selection of the twelve 1 Four of them, were or are working men, and no one dare gainsay the propriety of calling suoh a number of mechanics to the Council. The Lyltellon Times we notico is a little fogg"d as to distinguishing the men whom His Excellenov ha* honoured from their fellows. It designates the latter as operatives and the former as gentlemen. One little week ngo Messrs Jennings, Eigg, Jenkinson and Bolt were operatives, now according to the Minister ial organ in Christchurch, they avo gentlemen. If they were not gentlemen a week ago, they are hardly likely to be gentlemen now j but the Lyttelton Times evidently believes that the Liberal Party can turn an operativo into a gentleman, by a call to the Council, We sincerely trust that the four operatives had gentlemanly instincts before the Lyttelton Times discovered that they had come out of the ranks of the operatives and were entitled to rank as gentlemen. Four of the twelve new Councillors being qualified as exoperatives, five may be deemed fit as being ex-M.H.E.'s. This leaves only three to he accounted for, and of this trio one'is supposed to be nominated by ijir .Robert Stout, whuse slightest wish is said to be regarded as a command by the Cabinet. The remaining two are master-printers, and who can object to the fitness of a Liberal jourualist for any position. Any further objections are merely personal, Why should not a boilermaker wake up to find himself famous, and if one or two of the ex M.H.R.'s who have received promotion, happen to have been land speculators and exponents of that art of trafficking in sections, wliioh is so persistently denounced by tho Government, it oannot be helped. If money is to be made out of land, is it not better for a good Liberal to make it than a bad Conservative 1 It would have been difficult, if not impossible, for the Government to have picked out a team of men who had never, never, speculated in land. Even, at least, one member of the Ministry is supposed to have been tarred with that brush, which, according to the teaching of the Cabinet, is a demoniacal besom; but what right have we to peep behind the scenes and disclose the private ventures of true Liberals ? Our contemporary, the Lyttelton Times, after lauding to the sides each one of the dozen new Lords, concludes with a gentlo word of "amine. If any of these blight and glorious beings fall from pace, by voting against the Government, they will "commit political suicide, 1 How they will perform this act ot self-immolation is not explained, buf we fancy tlut tie Government is pot

quite sure that all its new men will run straight, and desires to intimate that if they display any tendency to think and vote for themselves, tlie Council will be abolished wi'h a view to punishing the individuals who are now called to sweeten and improve it.
