Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED 1878]

MONDAY, OCTOBER 17,1892.

SECOND EDITION

Being the extended title of ins Waikakapa Daily, with which it is IDKNIIOAIi.

Mkbsrs William McOullough and William Jennings of Auolsland, Mr Thomas Kelly of New Plymouth, the Hon. Edward 1 Richardson and Mr John Rigg of Wellington, Messrs Wm. Montgomery, J. E. Jenkinson andW. U. Walker of Clirutchurch, Mr James Eees of Greymouth, Messrs W. M. Bolt and John McGregor of Dunedin, and Mr Henry Feldwick of Inv9rcargill have been appointed members of the Legislative Council, Some of the dozen new Lords wo know to be very good men, Messrs Richardson, Monu gomery and Walker, are, for example, thoroughly trustworthy j but there are others about whom we know little or nothing, It seems strange that men, who havo hitherto occupied no prominent position in the Colony, should bo suddenly pitchforked into the Legislative Council; for hitherto, oven when an-inferior man was selected, he was suro to be known from the North Cape to Inveroargill. Taking the batoh, as a whole, there is no cause for alarm. Some do not

■ require leavening and others who do, will speedily get the necessary experience, The Upper House poseesses a high character and reputation which cannot be destroyed by the new np» pointments, The Chamber will not come down to the level of a few of the more undesirable of the new men, but it will bring the latter up to its own standard. There is, too, a contingent advantage in the consideration that the Upper House is safe from tbo assaults of the advanced Liberals of the Hogg type who are opposed to bi-cameral legislation and j want the low Lower House to be the Alpha and Omega of politics. The Radioes in grasping these twelve new honorariums, have, as it were, taken the Queen's Shilling, When i prinoiple pulls them in one direction and money in another they nro wonl to give a preference to filthy luore. Ir this instance they have taken th( money and sacrificed their principle! and no more from the publio piatfora can they talk about sweeping awa; the Legislative Counoil, It is sad to think of the number of Camp fol lowers of the Liberal party who havi had their hopes of preferment in thi Upper House annihilated by tin eeleotion which has been.made. Nearl; two yearsago when the only Smith, th' champion of Waipawa, was droppei like a hot potato by the Govcrnraen because he sought a position in th House for which he was notorious! unfit, it was said that lie was oonsolei for his (lisuppointment by a promise o a Lordship. Now many promises 01 half promiees of a similar kind have

been mado since then ? We know not, but we are aware that something like a hundred Badicals in different parts of the Colony have been indulging themselves in visions of promotion to a chamber, which, according to their own principles, ought to be abolished, The true Radical, however, never refuses pay or position. Did even that Radical ofJttadicals, Sir Robert Stout, when he was offered a title, think twice before accepting it ? As it was with the head of the party so it is with the tail. Any good thing that comes in their way is eagerly snatohed. Abolish the Upper House wlieu twelve honorariums and twelve titles were to be made I Badical virtue does not appreciate sacrifices of this kind and all the good thing.", that can be realised out of the situation, by the party now in power, will be pulled off..
