Now lhat the Estimates are under discussion in the House of Representatives, we Cake the opportunity to ■ refer to a certain sum of £260 which wbb voted last year for the Haiwhata roads. Some little time ago, »h erroneous impreeaion existed io the minds o£ some persons, we believe, to ' the effect that an injustice was being attempted with reference to tbese roads. We heard it hinted that Mr W, C. Buchanan, and the Messrs Beetham and Moore-were conspiring 1 to injure Mr Hito and some other - settiara near the mouth of the Kaiwhata river—that they ware agitating and wire-pulling to divert b vote of £250 originally intended to benefit the small holdings of the Nitz, Kumtner, and MoPhee families, towards opening up a road through Chalmers'pro- ■ perty which units their own particular purposes. The persons, wbo disseminated this disquieting information, were understood to have obtained it from Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R, Now, assuming that the member for Msbterton hag expressed himself ill any such terms aa these, we trust ha will forgive us if we say that he can know [ nothing of the facts and nothing of the country itself, or he would be aware tbat Mr Buchanan has absolutely no interest wliatI ever iu the road through Chalmers'—that he will use only the road leading direct to Gladstone and his own properly, and that the Messrs Beetham will not, as a matter of fact, use either road in any way. The true state.of the case may be put thus : There is a road to the East Coast from Gladstone, and the only other continuous road to the Coast is not!
