f Tub somewhat alarming number o petty robberies 'recorded during tbi current week in Masterton tends ti „ make every householder uncomfort able. It. haß for years' past beei " noticed thai the police staff in thi town is not commensurate with tb< many and varied duties which de volve upon it. Now, apparently th inevitable breakdown has come to pus and the town iB at the mercy of pos sibly a few dishonest persons who ap pear to make a nightly raid on thi hack premises of residents. A fe« owners of property in the centre o tho town already put their hands inn their pockets to maintain a night watchman but the duties of this oilici which are performed with grea fidelity by Mr E. Braggins, an necessarily limited to the detec tion and prevention. of dangei from fire. This duty really ought ti devolve upon the police in a towi > of this size, but as the departmen does not give a staff which will enabli night work to be undertaken, citizen: ' have to put their hands in thei: pockets to make up for the shortcom ings of art inefficient lorcp. It would perhaps, be Btill more unreasonable t< expect them to pay another man ti watch for thieves, especially as the] are taxed quite enough already foi all purposes of good government, ant have ut right to an adequate protec tion oi their property by the' propei authorities. Wo trust His Worship the Mayoi ) will take some action ill the direotior of bringing unde: the notice of the Government the unprotected condition ol the town. Ho must himself, from hit professional experiences, be well informed as to the strength of the local police staff and its power to cope with the grave difficulties, which it is called upon to face, From bit official position and his general knowledge of the working of the police department, he is clearly the most suitable resident to represent to the Government the defenceless state of Masterton or to take such steps with colleagues in the Borough Council as will bringabout such a representation, The present condition of the town, with these nightly robberies, is peri fectly disgraceful and ought not to be tolerated for twenty-four hours, All law and order appears to be set at defiauco, and possibly the next thing we shall hear will be that the police premises have been visited '■ by night prowlers anxious to pick up any unconsidered trifles that may come in their way, and which can be appro priated without risk.

The climax has como 1 Tho Auckland Liberal Association, which consists of eight men and one boy, lias left off passing fatuous resolutions about the Crown, tho virtuoß of Seddon and Company, and what not, and have now decided in solemn congress assemblod (boy iucluded) that the constable who arrested Finloy in Wellington ought to be rewarded by the Defence Department, Tho Auckland Liberal Association evidently thinks it quite a marvel that tho constable instead of doing his duty did not run to the Hon. Mr Seddon and ask for a detachment of the Porinanont force and a Gatlinggun. The average person, however, remarks the Hawkes 1 Bay Herald, supposes that a man who enlists in the police undertakes, as his ordinary duty to arrest criminals, As for pluck, tho action of tho Wellington constable will not compare for an instant with the conduct ol tho Napier constablo who arrested, red-handed, the man who had just before killed Robertson by stabbing, and who had the knife in his hand at the timehe was arrested.
The Leeds Mercury, in its angling notos, has tho following paragraph "Mr F, Whitley, an old Wharfedale augler, now-located at Wellington, New Zealand, sends me this week some interesting items of news concerning the fishing in that countiy. He says that his best basket last season with tho fly was 25 trout, weighing 331b, besides nine others given away; the largest fish 31b 3oz. His other best baskets were 24 trout, weighing 291b; 20 trout, 231b; 24 trout, 214 b, etc,, etc. He concludes his letter by saying, 1 So you see wo have better fishing hero than in tho Wliorfe.' Better 11 should think it is; but, then, I ahould very much doubt if any country !b capable of producing such splendid 'trout-fishing as New Zealand; and It is comparatively » vory short time ago sinoo they wore introduced over there from England. The flies most successful on those rivers are ones dressed on about No. C hook;, with claret, orange, and dull-red bodies; wings from tho partridgo, grouse and jay. They are mostly ribbed with broad gold tinsel,'"
A flattering verdict.—Speaking ol one of the most noted of ccloniaf specialities, tho press says"Sharland's Baking Powder deserves more than a passing notice, for tho "Moa" Brand Baking Powder Bnjoyß a reputation second to none. From one end of New Zealand to the other, largo orders are received for this popular brand. Even in the meat out of tho way districts t! e caroful house-wife, possessed with tl'e laudable ambition to mako her bread aid her scones better than her neighbours', buys Sharland's Baking Powder, and triumphs over tllo fow of her loss sensible sisters, who, from a mistaken Benso of ecouomy, buy apparently cheaper brands. The rocipe of a good Baking Powder is anything but a secret; but how very few manufacturers use, as Messrs Sharland & Co. do, tho best only of materials, carefully tested before mixture and exactly proportioned," Readers, who require an economical satisfactory and healthful Baking Powder, cannot do better than uso tho , Moa"brand.--ADVi
