Eecontly at Seager's Foundry, in Wellington, there was a public trial of a now patent cross cut saw, Alargenumberof gontlemen interested in sawmilling and forest olearing wore present, and spoko ot tho invention in the highest terms of commondation. Tho principle of tho patent is that of a crank worked by a hand-turned flywheel, which driveß an ordinary oross-cut Baw at quick speed backwards and forwards through tho log. Any sized log may bo sawn through by tho labour of ono man in a third of tho thno in which it now takes two men to doit. The saw may also beusod for falling the largest trees; tho front scarf may bo out out quicker than the smartest bushman oyer swung an axo. Then it may bo reversed, and enn be backed np by maul and wedge in the usual way. A long or short saw may be utod to suit tho class of timber to bo oporated upon. The machine may bo profitably used at privato houses, on farms, on stations amjAC in woodyards, and if the wood is lights; ~ boy can cut up more wood in tho same time than could bo sawn by two men. The machine itself is light, handy and portable, and tho inventor informs us that it can bo put in the market for L 5 or LG. The patentee, Mr 010 Olsen, of Wainui, sawmiller (a young New Zealandor) is, wo notice by tho New Zealand Times, now In Wolljngton making arrangements for tho manufacture and saio of this very important labour-saving inyention.
