BEIKO IDE EXTENDED TITLE OF THE Wairarai'a Daily, with which it is IDENTICAL.
The first lialf-yenrly shareholders' meeting of tlie Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association must bare passed off satisfactorily to the directors and management, The members present were surprised to find that the business returns were more favourable than they had anticipated, and tho directors were no doubt gratified to know that with the exception of a peisonal challenge made by Mr Gapper, and to which no exception could be taken, they possessed the confidence and thanks of their constituents. The mastermind of the Association has within the first six months of its existence brought its shares to a premium, and undoubtedly people who have known and appreciated Mr M, (jaselberg's excellent business qualifications for the past twenty years will, after this achievement, be in danger of thinking him infitllable. Ot course the workiug out of the Association has taxed the energies and minds of others besides its ohief, but oven bere it must be recognised that, the leader associated with himself the right men to produce thexesult which has been accomplished. To us, us journalists, the principal feature of interest in Wednesday's gathering is the pledge which tho Association gives of developing local industries, and the consideration that one, the Dreyerton Dairy Factory, is already an accomplished fact. Wo have secured within half a year the first fruits of the enterprise of the Association in this direction, and we look forward to Masterton householders being shortly supplied witb factory butler, Wo are well aware that factory butter once in the market will kill private dairy butier, and we trust farmers about Masterton will see that the days of private dairying sro numbered, and that they must mako up their minds to go with the stream and support a Masterton dairy factory. We do not believe that a Masterton factory will be long in coming,. This new Association has to be reckoned witb seriously, It talks about a thing one month and the next does it. We are not quite used to this style of transacting business, and cbangis which formerly took years may now be brought about in a few days, There is already a whisper, we believe, in the board room, aiout a Masterton dairy factory, and we should not be surprised at any time to bear tb&t the word had been passed to build one, Tho new Asscciation must, as we Bay, be taken seriously, and if farmers find it means business in the dairy factory line, the best thing they can do is to cooperate and see if they cannot draw more money for their milk than they have been able to obtain in the past for tbeir butter. The Association is taking a lead in the practical promotion of lot-al industries and manufactures. We hope it will not be assumed that it necessarily has e monopoly in developing such important enterprises. Other projectors, no doubt, will also enter the field and will be stimulated by tho example which is being; set. Still we are grateful that so strong a body shouldtake progressive steps which are necessary for the prosperity of tho community and wish it heartily a continuation of that Buecess which it has already achieved.
