my wife, with which 1 partly purchased n (tarrying pl«nt consisting of two hrakos and six horses, giving a bill of Bale for the balance of the purchase money, which was £l5O, I was put to considerable expense right off m purchasing new harness and exchanging horsos, and shortly after starting business I became mm bio, through an illness, to work for about four months, anil so hud to employ another in my place. I also had to so to Napier for ihe sake of my health, Added to theeo difficulties, business, for about two months, becurne very slick. I suffered also a loss of about £IG by an accident in which a brake and a dog-cart were smashed to pieces. I have endeavoured to pull through my difficulties by from time to time borrowing Bums of money, for which I had to pay heavy interest. In conjunction with Mr Jensen and Messrs Fuiclisr and Hall, I took a sub-con-tract from Mr Stovens at road-making in the Main street, Puhiatua, which resulted in a loss to me of £ls. I attribute my bankruptcy to the difficulties above-mentioned, to starting the business with, an insufficient capital, and to making bad debts in my businjso,"
