Peed is becoming vory plentiful on tho Easfc Coast, the growth of grass being good and considerably in advance of that in the vicinity of Masterton, Probably the smaller degree of frost, whioh would be experienced in country nearer the sea, accounts for the difference.

We learn from the Evening Press that-the negotiations are now all but complete. There wero eight contestants, and when it is noted that the pace was at tho. rate of six miles an hour, it will be seen how much there is to achitve in the way of improving the walking fait of a horse, which Is really of very great Importance to the farmer or teamster. Tho spectators, wo loam, took more interest in tho walking match than in the racing events; and ono noteworthy feature of tho trial waß that two of the losing horses started hot favourites.

There was a fairly large and appreciative audience present, Unfortunately tho stage was not extensive enough to permit the wholo of the scenery being used, such as tent, trypod, etc,, but notwithstanding this, the scene was very pretty, especially the lime-light tableau representing The Dying Gypsy. Tho youni? people performed their parts admirably, reflecting much credit on thomselves and on the management, The entertainment concluded with the laughable farce " Tho Two Thompsons," by Messrs J. Barnard and E, H, Wyatt, who fairly -yL convulsed the house at times. ' JP

The Town Clerk, on receipt of the letter, communicated with the postal authorities, and received ■ a reply stating that arrangements had been made to fumigate the mails arriving from places outside the Australian colonies.
