" Objectionable refuse in too Waipoua " was a subject of consideration at Tuesday's meeting of the Masterion BoroughCounoil, an effort being made to work in harmony with the County Council in the matter of its removal. The larger question of keeping the river pure ,was not touched upon, yet it is.one that is very material to the health aDd comtort of the inhabitant? of the town. The Waipoua river is the principal bathing resort of the young people of Masterton,- and it is most inoumhent upon the Council as a Board of Health to preserve its ivaters from pollution, It is fllsu, as

the most convenient and accessible fishing ground of great value to the community, No persistent or systematic effort has ever yet been made to keep the stream wholesome. In vain have bathers complained of filth floating down the stream, and equally in vain have been the protests of anglers, We are of the opinion that the bathers arid anglers of the town, as well as the persons resident near its banks, have a perfect right to demand from the authorities that th>< river should be kept absolutely pure. The County Council, one of the responsible bodies, did, on a certiin occasion, display some willingness to exercise tho powers it possesses to keep the stream free from nuisances, and probably it would co-operate cordially in any direction which would bo likely to bring about this object, if invited to do so by the Borough Council.
