Wilson, The various billboards of tho town have during the night assumed quite a different appearance, and are now re-' splendent with gaily ooloured posters, announcing tho coming of Wirthßros. latest show. A roeoting for tho purposo of forming a Prohibition Loaguo in Greytown was held in the Council Chambers last (Wednesday) evening, Mr R. McGregor being in tho chair, Thoro was a good attendance, It waß resolved that this meeting is of opinion that it is dosirablo
to form a Prohibition Loaguo in town, and that tho present platform oFthe Loaguo be the endoavour to carry out the Local Option olauses of the Licansing Act, and to get tho said Act amended in any direction, thought desirable. At the close of the meeting tnonty-three meinbors enrolled thorn." selves.
The man-hole of tho engine on the Qreytown-Woodside Railway line was blown out yesterday afternoon, and tho journey from Greytown to Woodsido had to be made by bus. The preliminary announcement of Messrs Wirthßros.' groat Mikado Troupe of Japanese and Wild Bedouin Arabs, in addition to a quite now circus of ordinary proportions.which will open in Masterton for a two nights season on Thueaday September 22nd, appears in our advertising columns, An excellent house greeted the production of " Tho (Juv'nor" in tho Masterton
Theatre last night by the Greytown Amateur Dramatio Society, the downstairs seats being nearly all occupied, while upstairs tho attendance was almost
equally favourable, The Catholio Sohool, Masterton, in aid of which the pertor-
mance was given, should certainly auk, stantially benefit, and those who toSff part in the play and the Key Mr McKonmi, who most energetically and syatc* i mattoally worked up an iuterost in it, arc jointly to be congratulated on the result of their efforts. The comedy it-, solf, of which the plot has previously been sketched in our columns, was pre* sented in a manner which drew forth frequent expressions of approval from tho audience, and the humorouß situations and amusing dialogues which aroso through tho misconceptions of Mr But" tbrscutch, the retired confeotioier; and tho extromo deafness nf Theodore Maoolesfield, the boat-builder, wore received with muoh appreciative laughter. These two characters, pourtrayed ro-, speotivoly by Mr Wriothesloy and MrD. J. Duff, were indeed the lifo of tho piece, although in this connection there must not be omitted mention of Mr J. K. Hornblow, who took the smaller part of the Yorkshire groom, Gregory, with happy humour and muoh appropriate casoof manner. Tho other characters in tho play were taken by the Misses Jacobs, M. Brunton, M. Skeet, H.dkeet, G. Haycook, and Messrs T. Haycock, A. G. Thompson, F, Morson, W, 0. Nation, ' S. Jansen, and H. Madaen, and were done fair justice to, Although the dialogSjt of the minor characters wassomotimes a littlo lacking natural expression in delivery, it was pleasing tu notice that all spoko up well and that each thoroughly ' know hi« part, rather an exceptional thing to lmd in an amateur performance. Ap* propriato music was rendorod by an orchestra of five, conducted by. Mr M, B. Varnham with Mr Koisenborg at the piano, Tho sconory and stage effeots throughout wore attractive and well, arrangod, and showed that no care had been spared in this department. The piano, which was an admirable instrument, was auppliod by tho Dresden Pianoforto Company, and the furniturecame from the establishment of Messrs Hounslow and Hoar. With reference to the statement cabled i from London that a Mr Walters has patented a process for removing carbonia 1 acid from cool chambers, which, it is 1 bolioved, will bo of immense value in dealing with fruit and butter, we might mention that the patentee, who is a Dunodin engineer, woll known to us personally, is a man -who has mado a largo fortune by successful inventions. He commenced Mb career as a working mechanic, but his ingenuity combined with rare business aptitude soon him out of the ranks. Any invention to* which he puts his name is pretty cortain to becamo successful, and those : interested In buttor export can, we bolieve, rely upon Mr Walton 1 new idea turning out advantageously to their interests, The Masterton Orchestra, some twelvo in number, visited Tauoru last (Wednesday) nightand gave a most enjoyablo entortaininont, which was greeted with a good house, Tho aelec. tiona played by the Orchestra were highly appreciated, especially tho '•American Barn Danco" which was vociferously encored, Songs and recitations wero also given by Messrs 0. Clifford, Heard, Rocs, Giuders, Russell, Hooper, and Master Jago, the lattor'a singing being groatly admired, A dance, ' at which about twenty couples wore present, concluded a most onjoyablo evening.
