Messrs Lowes and lorns announce an opening stock salo, or rather a re-oponing one at Eketahuna. Eleven years ago (hit firm introduced into this town and neighborhood a well-arranged system of periodical sales which has beeu of great benefit to the district by establishing a trustworthy market quotation for all classes of stock. Owners of sheep, cable and produce, whether they attend the yards or stay away, re'y upon Messrs Lowes and lorns' fortnightly roports as a guido in all their dealings. Many of them will remember the old days when stock had no quotable value and when two or three buyers pit their heads together and fixed up rates which were not altogether in favour of Billets. However, Messrs Lowes and lorns' new business system soon revolutionised the old-fashioned ireihods of buying andsellingand established better lines for the conduct oi the trade. A few years ago the firm to wh-ch we refer included Eketahuna in its list of fisf.d sales, but finding that town was scarcely ripe for a regular market abandoned it for a time, Now the requirements of Eketahnna and the rapid prowl h of settlement in its neighborhood necessitates proper market accommodation, and Messrs Lowei and lorns in another . column announce their arrangements for supplying it. The new central yards in th : a thriving centre will no doubt be a convenience to its settlers and profitable to the firm which has provided such excellent accommodation for tho:)U

The performance of "The Guv'uor" by the Groytowa Amateurs in the Masterton Theatre Royal on Wednesday evening next is looked forward to with great interest. The plot of the piece is very simple, Mr Butterscotch (Mr TVriotheflley), a retired confeotioner of gentlemanly proclivities, haq a wife, a son, and a daughter. Each of these povsesßlous came to him through the usual. medium of marriage, with this difference that he owes his grown-up son and daughter to an early allianoe, and his wifo to a very recent one. Needless to say, his son Freddy (Mr T. Haycock) is in love, and his daughter K'lte (Miss M. Brunton) is ditto. Of course," the Guv'nor" doesn't know it—and so lar the plot is true to life. Cut we realise that there are things which "may happen in plays but not in Putnoy" when we learn that their respective sweethearts are also brother and sister—the children of a deaf old boat-builder on Thames side named Macclesfield (Mr J. D. Duff). The boat-builder's son Theodore, a medical student, (Mr A. G. Thompson) comes to seo Miss Butterscotch in her father's garden, while Carrie Macclesfield (Miss Haycock) receives her swain in her home among tho boats, We get another touch of real life in tho discovery that the boatbuilder'a wifo (Miss B, Skeet) knows all about her daughter's love affair, that the second Mrs Butterscotch (Miss Jacobs) is the confidante of her step daughter—and that the fathers know nothing at all of what is going on. Some nf the resulting complications can bo easily imagined. The cbolerio old Butterscotch, discovering traces of a gentleman's visit, jumps to the conclusion that his young wife is carrying on a flirtation; whilo tho boatbuilder formally askod by Freddy to bostow his daughter upon him, " can't hear a bloomin' word 11 and supposes that the si.itor has come to buy a pleasure boat of.his building. As may be supposed, poetic justico triumphs in tho ond, The teara and foiy of the first two Aois are dispelled in Act 111. Evorybody understands everything ; and the curt: in finally falls on a sceno of peace and arnii.y and tho propheoy of wedding bells. " Your 'ands I" says old Macclesfield : and we are quite sure tho audienco will give their hauds to loud and long applause when that time comes.

There was r very [larc;o attendance at the usual weekly meeting of the Master* ton Mutual Improvement Society, hold in Ihe Wesleyan schoolroom last evening, at the President (Rev J. Dukes) ocoupied the chair. A mock Parliamentary election comprised the business of lho evening, in which a lady (Miss Williams) and gentleman opposed each otheri The lady candidate was nominated by Messrs 0. Pragnell and J. Baum. ber, and the sterner aspirant by Messrs J. Johnson and L, Donald. The speeches | of the nominators were decidedly abovo the average, while the candidates' speeches evinced a most creditable grasp of Colonial politics, Questions in the orthodox style were submitted by some of the members, and gave rise to a deal of crossing and Parliamentary phrasing, while on more than one occasion the Chairman's ruling was inyoked. The voting resulted in Miss Williams escuring a majority of four votes in a heavy poll, The Ohairman acted as Returning Officer and the proceedings were intensely interesting and at times exciting. Short essays will be read by several members at the Society's next meeting. A man named Harry Smith has been arrested at Wellington on a charge of hayingobtainedgoodßfrom MrFrederick Lee, of the Blnirlogic Junction Hotel, by means of false pretences, It appears that the accused went to Mr Lee and reprO' sented that he had the sum of £7 10s coming to him from the Kahumingi station, where he had been working. On the strength of thiß representation ho was given £1 in cash and obtained a further supply of goods, When the order was given MrVallance it was fouud that the accused had left tor Wellington and there was no money coming to him.
