It is alleged that members of tho Masterton Fire Brigade hwo lodged a written complaint againßt tho premises of a certain respected member of tho Borough Council. That a nuiaance exists in the spot indicated is undeniable, but we can hardly believe that the officers of the C'ouuoil or its Committee would deliberately connive to keep upa nuisance in the hoart of tho town, when it is clearly their dnty to suppress it.
Sir Robert Stout, as President of tbA Nntional Liberal Associatwo,sentacon-f gratulutory letter to Mr Gladstone by yesterday's mail, from Dunedin. Tho compulsory residence clause of the new Band Bill has been altered to read as tollowa:—Continuous residence on bush or swamp lands, six years; lease in perpetuity lands, ton years j open or partly open landß, 80ven yeara. Tho doctor's bill for one of the persons now on tho .North VYairarapa Benovolont Society readies the nice little total of £l2los for the last throe mouihs.
A public meeting of the Featherston Town Board will bo held in the Odd-, fellows' Hall next Monday to finish business left ovor from last meeting. As this will be the last meeting of the present Board, intending candidates will have a chance to address tho ratepayers. In connection with the arrest of Car Mueller, late of Wellington, the Sydney Morning Herald of the 28rd ult< says : "A determined attempt to avoid arrest waß mado by a passenger by the Dnion Company's b.s, Tekapo, which arrived in Sydney from Now Zealand at half-past six jesterday morning. Upon the arrival of tho stoamor Detectiros Kocuo and Gaieves boarded tho vessel for tho pip-, poso of arresting a man named (Sri Moeller on acbarceof having forged a promissory noto fur £BS in Wellington, New Zcßland; but no such name was known, nor could they find a person answering the supposed description, Tho detectives were assisted to the ut» most in their search of the vessel by tho captain nnd officers, and, after two hours had elapsed, they arrested a man who was concealed in one of the cabins, and who, it wbb ascertained, had shipped under the name of Eillier. Bo was subsequently brought before the Water Police Conrt, and was remanded for a week for the production of the original warrant." Constable M'Gill has been seat to Sydney to bring Moeller back to Wellington.
Charles Tuck haßbeon committed for trial for embezzling the funds of tho Plako County Connoil. Some desultory discussion took place this morningamongst the members of the North Wairarapa Benevolent Society in roforenceto a letter bearing on the administration of charitable aid in this district, which recently appeared in .the Wairarapa Daily Times, but as the writer did not sign his namo to thj effusion the trustees decided thattjl*matter was not worth noticing. Oua gpntleman, however, suggoatod that "Pro bono publico" (the mom de plumo abovo which tho letter appeared, might alter his opinions if ho attended the Society's lueotinga,
We havo received n copy of what professes to be the annual report of the Wairsrapo, Uacing Club. It is unsigned by any responsible porson, some accounts are presented, but are neither added up nor audited- Meetings can of Course doanythinrj,butwe utterly fail to sea how tho annual gathering, to be held on Saturday next, can adopt a balancesheet liko the ono just circulated. Thore is nothing new in this form of presenting accounts. It is indeed the old stylo of dishing them up, but the time has now arrived, in our opinion, for a new departure.
