Wellington, Wednesday,

In the Supreme Court to-day, the chargo against Frank li. Lowe, alias Campbell, of obtaining goods liy false pretences is proceeding. Littlcjohn and Son's assistants Rave evidence that the accused obtained jewellery from their establishment on July Bth such goods being given on n cheque signed by Campboll, also on the reference of Cameron and Chris'io with whom the accused had had buuiness trimsactions, and a telegram from Mr Bell, draper of Masteriou, who said accused had always dealt fairly with him, Mr Kimbell, accountant at the Bank of Australasia, Masterton, deposed that the accused hud un account with their Bank, but was overdrawn on July Bth to the amount of £4 15s lOd, and he knew of-no authority lor the accused to have a further overdraft. The cheque given by accused to Litllejolm k Sons was returned " not provided for," prior lo the present overdraft. The accused's acoount had been overdrawn in one for i2.

ldrCoates, in opening the defence, said he would place the accused in tho witness box and felt confident he could establish his innocence. Tlie accused had an account in the Bank of Australasia and had' fair grounds for believing that the cheque given Littlejohn would be honored. Satisfactory reasons, he said, would bo given for the prisoner's visit to Sydney. .
