In the course of. an interview "pith a representative of Daniel's Agency inj3an Frpcjaco, Sip Matthew Davie's said he was indeed surprised at the turn of events in connection with the affairs of the Mercantile Bank in Melbourne, and lie was returning to the Colony as soon as possible, because of the unsettled condition of the Bank. On his arrival, he would at orica set about to disentangle the position, He declared that the charge that he had used the funds of the institution for private purposes was simply absurd.
