Michael Thompson was charged with having been drunk in a publio place; with smashing a window of the Eoyal Hotel, and with using profane language in the street, The accused pleaded guilty to being drunk and smashing tho window, but denied having used obscene language, Constable Stewart deposed to hav* ing arrested the accused, whose language wis both profane and obscene. Sergeant M'&rdle gave corroborative evidence. Tbe accused stated that be bad used bad language because be was ill-treated by the police. He was busufalling and bad come 10 town to get men. He was sorry for what he bad done, and if let off would not visit Masterton again. He had been all over tbe Colony, but had not been looked up until he came to Masterton.

On the first charge the accrued was fined five shillings, on thosefud ordered to pay for tho damage done or three days' hard labour, and on the third he was sentenced to three months' hard labour in the Wellington Terrace Gaol.
