In referring to the case in which Thomas William Tait, of Masterton, was recently committed for trial for perjury, the Greytown paper says:—The only matter for surpriso is, in our opinion, that committals for perjuty are not almost weekly occurrencn, For downright hard shearing, for mutually contradictory statements on oath a: to the matters of fact, commend ub to the law courts—and not least' to the police courts. This is So notoriously the case, that numbers of persons would sooner suffer wrong than bandy words in court with a shameless liar who has the odds in his favour nine times out of ten by reason of his sheer audacity.
