MASTERTON TOWN LANDS TRUSTEES.
Monthly Metino, The ordinary monthly meeting of the Masterton Town Lands Trustees was held last (Friday) evening, there being present Messrs W, Lowes Chairman), A. W, Kenall, S. E. Gapperandl H.E.Eton. MINUTES. The minutes ot the previous meeting weraread »nd confirmed. -, FINANCE. The Treasurer reported a credit balance in the Bank of £lB 1 Is. The Chairman said there was really a debit balance, as grants had been made to the Fire Brigade and certain schools which were to be paid when funds permitted.
SCHOLARSHIPS. Mr J. Barron wrote, requesting information upon the refusal of the Trust to grant assistance to his son in taking advantage ot a scholarship. He had made enquiries and had found that a. grant had been made to Mr Walton, who was possessed of considerable property. He could not understand how his application came to be refused, He took it as an insult to Bay that the grants were charitable ones. The Chairman thought the facts had already been fully explained to Mr Barron, They could only reiterate these facts. Furthermore, Mr Barron was not now a resident of the district, He would move that the letter be received. Mr Kenall seconded,—Carried. BALANCE SHEET.
The Controller-General forwarded the balance-sheet duly audited, The Chairman said be thought to conserve the funda of the Trust it would be better to print the balance-sheet in one paper only." They might call for tenders or publish the statement in the papers alternately. Mr Benall moved that tenders be called for the publication of the balance-sheet. Mr Eton seconded.—Carried. An account from the Audit Department for the auditing of. the balance-sheet was passed for payment.
ACCOUNTS. . A number of accounts, including insurances on Trust proper ties, were passed for payment, 80HOOL GRANTS, Tbe Rev Father M'Kenna applied for a grant of £l6 2a for St Patrick's School, enclosing a list of improvements it was proposed to make, The Secretary of the Maaterton School Committee wrote, applying for a grant of £GO on the general account, and £2O for special work. The Chairman thought the application of the Masterton School should he postponed to permit' of the attendance of a deputation whiok had been appointed by that body, Mr Gapper expressed the opinion that the funds at the disposal of the Trustees should be distributed on a prorata scnle.
The Chairman oould see no reason for altering the present airangements. He pointed out that the scuoolh could not expeot as large a grant this year as last, as the capitation had been increased. The funds of the Trust were very low. The Femridge Sohool Committee
made application for a grant of £ls for the same purposes as last year. Mr Reqall moved that the consideration of the applications be held OYer till next meeting. Mr Eton seconded.—Carried. The Secretary was instructed to procure a schedule from the Masterton bohool Committee of the proposed expenditure, AHMT BARRACKS. Major Robinson, of Wellington, wrote, requesting that the roof of the Salvation Army barracks be repaired, as it was very leaky. The matter was left in the hands of Mr Gapper and the Secretary, to report to the Chairman, with power to act. TOWH aobe 88.
The correspondence between the Secretary and Mr D. Carman regarding the lease of part Town Acre 88 in Church street wns read, the offer of the Trustees having been accepted by Mr Carman.
A KURUPUNI PROPERTY, Applications for tlio lease of the paddock next to the Fire Brigade station at Kurupuni were received from J. B. Eobertsand James M'Keo. —The Secretary was instructed to write to the applicants, enclosing certain conditions. KURUPUNI FIRE BRIGADE.
The Secretary of the Kurupuni Fire Brigade wrote, applying for a grant of £2 to assist in paying for the new firebell.
The Chairman thought i he Borough Council was the proper body to contribute.' It appealed tbnt the funds of the Trust were aprey for everything of this sort, He would suggest that the Brigade be informed that the funds of the Trust wero at a low ebb and that the Borough Council was the proper body to apply to, Mr Gnpper moved that the Brigade be informed that the Trust cannot see its way clear to make a grant, and suggests that the insurance companies be applied to. Mr Reoall seconded,—Carried. BRUCE STREET. The Borough Council wrote, asking if the Trust could pay half the cost of making a footpath in Bruce Street, The Chairman thought the application an unjust one. The whole of the land had been given by the Truatesa. He would move that the request be not entertained. Mr Gapper seconded,—Carried. General.
GENERAL, A few minor matters were dis cussed, and the defaulters' list havini been considered the meeting ad journed,
