For some time past, says an exchange, a vciy bright object has been visible in tho eastern sky every fine evening, shorljy aftor sunset, and has continued to Bhino al) nightlong. This object is the planet Mars, which is jusi now engaging the attention of all the most Famous astronomers on both eidea of the Equator, their object being to tuajte the yery best nf an -opportunity of testing and correcting the cardinal astronomical measure—the aun'a distance from the earth, Tha problem really is, however,, to determine, the distance of Mars from the earth. When this distance has been obtained it is easy enough to find the sun's distance also, by Kepler's Third Law, Oppositions of Mars take place at intervals of somewhat more that two years, but they are not all of equal value. The principal reason of this is tho great eccentricity of tho planet's orbit, When an opposition takes place at or about the time of tho planet's olusest approach to the sun the opposition is very favourable, On the presont occasion Mars is only some 35,000,000 miles trom the earth, and is a splendid telescopic object. A good instrument readily shows just now the polar' snow' and the 'oceans,' and generally impresses an observer with tho idea that he is looking at a real world, not very unlike his own, 'l'fie opposition takes place on tbe 4th instant, but the yery rjoarosf approach will be on the 7th.
